Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Turcios.
Hi Kevin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
My name is Kevin Turcios, and I am originally from Baltimore, Maryland. I grew up in Baltimore where I ended up attending college at the Maryland Institute College of Arts with a degree in animation. In college, I got my first introduction to a camera while learning stop-motion animation. Though at the time, I never knew that that small introduction would later on in my future turn into a full-blown career as a photographer and videographer! I got my first camera at the age of 23 as a gift and instantly was hooked. I spent every day from that point on learning every aspect of that camera. I would shoot nonstop. That camera would come with me everywhere I went. Very quickly, I learned that street photography was my niche, and through social media, a lot of people noticed. So much so that I started receiving requests from people to shoot events for them. It started becoming so consistent that I finally took that leap of faith and decided to start shooting full-time! But as I became a professional photographer my obsession for cameras only grew. So naturally, I started shooting videos, and with that came even more for me to learn. Then that led to me learning how to edit, and to this day, I’m always just learning more and more. Needless to say, I’ve very much fallen in love with everything that surrounds cameras!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The process of becoming a photographer/videographer has definitely had its ups and downs. The beginning was definitely one of the hardest points to get through. First, I had to learn equipment. Then, I had to learn editing. Then I had to learn advertising and pushing my brand. Then, I had to learn how to land and book clients. Then, I had to learn contracts. I had to learn all the ins and outs of running a business. It becomes very overwhelming very quickly! But the one thing I had to keep reminding myself, which I still remind myself, is NEVER GIVE UP!!!
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My specialty when it comes to photo and video is doing street/lifestyle work. I’ve become very known for my storytelling ability through visuals. I would say one of my proudest moments was being in the top 500 most viewed and downloaded creatives on Unsplash, with 165,000,000 views and 800,000 downloads. I would say the thing that sets me apart most from others is that I don’t just create for a check. I create because this is what I love, and I can never get enough of it.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The biggest thing I learned was how strong my immune system is. I have yet to ever come up positive for covid. So, yay for me.
