Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyla Rose Ault.
Hi Kyla, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I grew up all over Southern California, primarily in Los Angeles and San Diego. I spent my youth going back and forth from my mom and dad’s house. Being the oldest of 3 has taught me that you have to be very aware of everything you do. When I was 16, 2012, my mother passed away from cancer so I moved from Venice Beach back to San Diego with my grandparents who owned a shear sharpening company known as EdgeMaster. Before my mother passed, she worked alongside my grandfather traveling all over San Diego County in a mobile van he converted into a sharpening station so she got to know stylists from all sorts of salons. Fast forward to 2015 I was 18 and just graduated from High School. I had thought that I would go to our local community college for photography and journalism but that didn’t seem to be the plan I was destined to have. My best friend Spencer’s mom mentioned beauty school to him and scheduled a tour and I said I would go as moral support and check it out. When we arrived at Paul Mitchell the School San Diego, I was impressed already by all the attractive tattooed and cool hair wearing all black. When we passed the admissions office, they immediately recognized me as Nick Cutter of EdgeMaster’s granddaughter. They thought I was coming to do the tour when I said no, I just came to support my friend but after seeing the school and having a connection with the industry through three generations I thought why not if I hate it, I can always go to “real” college… I signed up that day and have not looked back since. I assisted for 4 years before finally taking my own clients behind the chair. It has been almost 10 years since I got licensed and I am so happy I walked in those doors with my friend that day. I have worked for New York Fashion Week, Los Angeles Fashion Week, Music Videos, Movies, and Magazines, as well as specializing in color, cutting, and styling. Makeup has always been a love of mine since I was a kid and being in this industry has brought me more joy and success than I have ever thought. I know my mom is proud.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has been rocky but overall, I would not have it any other way. I’m so grateful to my grandfather and grandmother who took me in after losing my mom and coincidentally opened my eyes to the beauty industry. Looking back, I have no idea where I would be if haven’t gone to Paul Mitchell the School that day.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Lisenced Cosmetologist who specializes in blonding, color corrections, precision cutting, event styling, as well as makeup applications for any type of event. Growing up in Los Angeles has set me apart from a lot of other HMUA because you get to meet so many diverse people from all types of industries so I find it easy to communicate especially when behind the chair or on set. I always have been very optimistic which makes my clients, models, or anyone I work with feel more comfortable.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I think with social media we have already started seeing a shift in the beauty industry making it a lot easier for regular consumers or other hair and makeup artists to follow trends and techniques. Education is key in the hair world so getting as much as you can keep you on top of your game. I know that for myself I sit on Instagram and tik tok for hours watching hair tutorials or makeup tutorials that I can then use on my clients or models on set. I also notice that “lived-in” looks are trending not just in the beauty industry but in fashion as well. Take the oversized, comfy but cute look as well as low Maintenace hair coloring such as balyage. I think Covid made people think twice about what is convenient for them as well as what is financially efficient.
