Today we’d like to introduce you to Landon Bergenthal
Hi Landon, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I discovered strength training at the age of twelve and began wrestling a year later, both of which became my foundation during a challenging period in my life. Training instilled discipline and provided stability when I needed it most. After high school, I experienced a profound personal loss with the passing of my father, which motivated me to carve a new path. I moved to San Diego to attend San Diego State University (SDSU), where I pursued a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology while exploring my passion for mixed martial arts (MMA).
In 2015, I graduated summa cum laude from SDSU, balancing academics with bartending to support myself—all while training and competing in martial arts. After earning my degree, I obtained multiple certifications in personal training, enabling me to turn my passion into a profession. Over the next five years, I worked with hundreds of clients in large commercial gyms, where I identified a significant gap in quality instruction and personalized coaching.
This realization inspired me to take action, and in May 2022, I founded Ronin Academy. Today, Ronin Academy offers expert coaching in strength training, nutrition, and martial arts to clients of all backgrounds and experience levels across San Diego County. My mission is to help individuals unlock their potential—both physically and mentally—through proper training and education.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Before launching Ronin Academy, I was thriving as a personal trainer at a large commercial gym in Solana Beach, managing a loyal and successful client base. Then, out of the blue, everything changed. I arrived at work one day only to discover the gym had been sold—a complete shock. Suddenly, I was faced with a tough decision: relocate and leave my clients behind or take a leap into the unknown and start something of my own. I chose the latter.
In just thirteen days, I launched my first business, secured a nearby studio to continue training my clients, and transitioned them seamlessly. It was an intense whirlwind, but I was determined to prioritize my clients and keep our momentum strong.
Looking back, I knew almost nothing about entrepreneurship at the time. But taking that leap of faith was the best decision I’ve ever made. The responsibility of building something from the ground up—and knowing its success or failure depended entirely on me—pushed me to grow in ways I never imagined. What felt like a devastating setback in the moment turned out to be the catalyst for one of the most rewarding chapters of my life.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in strength training, nutrition coaching, and mixed martial arts, bringing a comprehensive and evidence-based approach to fitness. My credentials include certifications in personal training, strength and conditioning, nutrition coaching, corrective exercise, performance enhancement, and behavioral change. Additionally, I hold a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology with an emphasis on fitness specialization. As a mixed martial artist, I am proficient in boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
The work I’m most proud of is the impact I’ve had on individuals facing significant challenges, such as troubled youth and high-risk health populations. Sometimes, all it takes is a small shift in direction to completely transform someone’s path. Witnessing those transformations has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.
I also take pride in leading by example. I train daily, embodying the discipline and dedication I aim to instill in my clients. It’s not just about teaching—it’s about practicing what I preach and showing others what’s possible through consistent effort and commitment.
What sets me apart is my unwavering commitment to integrity and results-driven coaching. I’ve spent the majority of my life honing my craft, acquiring the knowledge and experience needed to deliver exceptional service—not flashy marketing or empty promises. Too often, I’ve witnessed trainers overpromise and underdeliver, leaving clients disillusioned. My approach prioritizes transparency, ensuring every client receives the highest level of care and expertise.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
