Daily Inspiration: Meet Laura Shafer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Shafer.

Hi Laura , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, lived in Atlanta for 13 years and moved to California in 2008, working for the Department of Defense. I’m the Mother of 7 adult children, and my fiancé and I are marrying this year.

I’ve always loved art, from a young age. Anything artistic, from painting to music. My Grandmother placed my sister’s, cousins and myself in art school/ classes at Settlement Music School in Philadelphia where I grew up in the 70s, 80s.

I played the flute and violin in elementary school. My father bought me an upright piano when I was 10 years old.

I’ve always loved sketching and drawing. As an adult, my mediums now include acrylic and oil paints, air drying clay and Plaster of Paris, concrete ( which is one of my favorite mediums to work with) , I create my own silicone molds, I’m a Resin Designer, a Professional Photographer, and more recently I’ve become an Ai Editorial Artist & Creative Director.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not a smooth road, just life continues as your art passion sometimes gets placed on hold. Raising of children, working in your everyday career.

At times a lot of us Artists would just love to create for a living. Sometimes it’s not realistic, but you make time to create. A lot of times when you’re away from your craft, it gives you the opportunity to be inspired by things you may see or hear.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?

I think I’m most proud of my newest collections mentioned, as well as my 11inch tall sculpture Little Dancer Aged 14…a Degas re creation of the famous sculpture. I made the mold of her from silicone and I’ve created 2 of her so far.

How do you think about happiness?
I love beautiful, artistic things. I love viewing art, interior design, architecture. I love the outdoors, the beach, the ocean, the sand, the grass. I love photographing details of everything! I shot the runways at New York Fashion Week in Manhattan years ago. It was the most beautiful experience. The fashion the design, just gorgeous!

I’m currently creating my first coffee table book of my gorgeous Ai Editorial Art. It will be available within a week.
