Today we’d like to introduce you to Madelyn (Madi) Doyle
Hi Madi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began creating jewelry at a very young age and was always fascinated by rocks, crystals and fossils. I really fell in love with the craft of designing and making jewelry after attending the Gemological Institute of America (Carlsbad) where I received my Graduate Gemologist (GG) and Graduate Jeweler (GJ) certifications. Establishing Bound by Metal in 2017, I continued perfecting my skills focusing in sterling silver and turquoise goods, to honor my Dine (Navajo) ancestors. I have created a unique style that takes you back to the Wild West and continue to incorporate inspiration through my many travels around the globe. Currently working from my home studio in Oceanside with view of the gorgeous California coast.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I always knew I wanted a lifestyle of adventure, freedom and creativity. With that comes lots of discipline, I don’t have anyone telling me what to do or how to do it, which can be very tough. I am naturally an entrepreneur, but it’s a lot of responsibility running everything on your own. A huge obstacle was overcoming recent world economic and social events that were a significant detriment to luxury businesses. I used that time to really tune into my specific jewelry aesthetic and thought about what I wanted this brand to become in the future. Creativity burnout can come and go. Those are the times I go for a walk on the beach or book my next adventure. I always know that my creativity will be sparked when I spend time in nature and experience new things. So no, the road hasn’t been an easy one, but I would rather take the rocky road with the scenic view anyway.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a jewelry designer, fabricator and gem lover. I specialize in creating handmade jewelry focusing in sterling silver and turquoise, but I love playing with other precious stones and metals. My brand is mostly known by my chunky turquoise rings, cuffs and fun accessories, from a puppy tooth, to a fur backed pendant, pet tags and more. I love creating custom sentimental pieces. I specialize in and am particularly knowledgeable for sourcing gemstones from closed mines from the 50’s and 60’s. I am proud of having the courage to start a business on my own and sell my art, a little piece of me to be either loved or criticized. I am my own boss, I don’t have timed shifts so it’s all on me to have strength to show up (for myself) everyday. Staying authentic and unique to my style is challenging, but sets me apart from the rest. I can’t wait for what the future has in store!
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was a creative and outgoing child. I was always singing, dancing, painting or creating. Who doesn’t love glitter and sparkles? I loved anything fantasy related. I wanted to be a couple different things when I grew up, but an Archaeologist might have been in my top three. Dinosaurs and fossils are probably what first sparked my interest for a potential career. I had many themed parties, including a dinosaur party. The Museum Curator at the Gemological Institute of America came to visit my friends and I and brought several fossils and gems from the GIA vault. We then had a dinosaur fossil dig in my backyard! I developed an appreciation for crystals and their properties, when I was in middle school. I started my first jewelry company in high school called “Hypnotized Hippy”. I sold many stunning crystals, jewelry and tie-dye goods.
