Daily Inspiration: Meet Mariah Lynda Crandall

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariah Lynda Crandall

Hi Mariah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started out doing make up with my childhood best friend whose mom was a makeup artist. We would practice anytime I went over to her house and her mom was also an artist so she created a lot of really cool Looks. I then got an internship for a make up company called motive, cosmetics, and learned how to match foundations and do makeovers. I continue to do makeup for a while and then when I went to college, I joined this club called TheLook at SDSU. I was so inspired by the editorial photoshoots and I wanted my makeup to be included. I started really participating in the Styling Team and eventually working my way up to Styling vice president. Then one day I was working at my job as a host, and there was a fashion networking event thrown the day I was working. I was talking to one of the girls who was working the event and telling her about TheLook in my passion for make up and she asked if I would do make up for her designs at SD swim week. During that show, I was asked to do around 60 models because the other makeup artists didn’t show and I saw how much Runways needed more makeup artists. I started applying for every runway that I could, and DMing people I’ve been landed a job as The HMA beauty team lead for Fashion Republic. I am now doing shows such as LA Fashion week New York fashion week Paris fashion week and Milan. I’m very proud of my journey and how far I’ve come, and I strive to continue to put my best foot forward because this has been my dream.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Since doing runway shows, I have learned that I started out not being very good at makeup. I was always told I was good at makeup, but I never knew how much it actually took. I can name a couple runway shows where I started crying because I truly didn’t know the techniques. Something that people love to say about the industry is that it’s cutthroat and competition based but they don’t mention how supportive everyone is and how everyone is trying to get up. In the end, we are all looking for a team. Everyone I have met on this journey has helped me so much and I truly couldn’t do it without all of them.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in creative makeup. I feel like something that sets me apart from other make up artists is my creative visions. I have been painting and drawing since I was young and that was what got me in to make up. It was the graphic liner that I could make a new drawing on my face every day for the world to see. My favorite thing is to take an outfit and then make the makeup fully match that outfit. I like to picture the model as a canvas so when you look at them, it feels like a piece of art, everything is curated to each other. I always say that my number one goal is to make someone’s vision come to life.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as doing what I love every day and not having to worry about financial burdens. Also being able to be present in life itself. I feel like a lot of the time we are all too busy to sit down and be present and my definition of success would include always being able to have those moments of reflection and appreciation of everything life has given.
