Daily Inspiration: Meet Marika Segal

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marika Segal.

Marika Segal

Hi Marika, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
When I was 10 years old, I was introduced to the likes of 20th-century artists such as Picasso and Joan Miro’s artwork, and it began a passion in me to start drawing at that age with the loving support of my family. Since that time, I was experimenting with different art forms, such as drawing, painting, watercolors, digital art, etc. throughout the years. In the year 2012 between April and May my mother sister and I visited Ireland, my mother’s homeland. During the last week of the trip, a creative surge of artistic inspiration came about and felt a great desire to create a series of paintings of the universe (galaxies planets, stars, nebulas, etc.) within humans, animals, and objects. Since then, I’ve been so blessed to have sold many paintings and prints. Artistic inspiration still continues to come towards me and I am very grateful for it.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s definitely been a topsy-turvy road with my artistic path. Entering many artistic contests, trying to appeal to many media and article outlets, sometimes with nothing coming out of them. Getting my first mural done was very challenging since I couldn’t get a permit from the city of San Clemente during 2017 but a couple years later, I managed to get my first mural up in Dana Point and with the help of friends and family raise money for my first kickstarter for my first mural project.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I love to paint with acrylic on canvas using really bright neon colors giving my paintings a psychedelic and surreal feel to them, showing that humans, animals and objects have their own unique universe within them, yet connected to a greater universe in creation. I am grateful and proud to give back with my art, especially to kids. I love witnessing people react happily to my art when they see it and even some of their own unique projections upon it. My hope is for people to take away is deep sense of meaning and joy into their lives gazing at my art pieces, and the ones that most deeply resonate with them.

What matters most to you? Why?
Finding the joy and gratefulness in each day, even when the day is not the best you’ve ever had, it’s still a day in your life which is immensely precious beyond measure.
