Daily Inspiration: Meet Mary Jennings

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Jennings.

Hi Mary, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was fortunate to grow up in a deeply creative household, with both of my parents working as professional photographers. My passion for design began early, at six years old. I was already designing and sewing clothing and furniture for my Barbie dolls. Sewing quickly became a true love of mine, and by the time I was a preteen, I had won the Singer Sewing Contest twice, first at age 10, and again at 12.
As a teenager, I sewed most of my own clothing and dreamed of becoming a fashion designer. I knew that traditionally this path would lead me to New York City, but my heart was set on California. Shortly after high school, I moved west and pursued my associate degree at Mira Costa College while working full-time. I later transferred to San Diego State University, where my focus shifted to interior design – a field that still allowed me to channel my creativity into shaping beautiful, functional spaces.
While my journey didn’t take me to the runways of New York, it led me to a career that perfectly blends artistry, problem-solving, and the joy of creating environments where people feel inspired and at home.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Earning my college degrees while working full-time was a rewarding yet challenging experience. Later in my career, I discovered a similar challenge in balancing my passion for design with family life. I’ve always been dedicated to going above and beyond for my clients, ensuring every detail exceeds their expectations. This commitment often means putting in long hours, but the satisfaction of seeing their vision come to life makes the effort worthwhile. Overall, my journey has been relatively smooth. Even during periods when the economy has slowed, the remodeling industry has remained steady. Homeowners consistently seek to update their kitchens and bathrooms, especially when relocating isn’t an option.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
For the past 23 years, I have been a proud designer with Remodel Works Bath and Kitchen, specializing in kitchen and bathroom remodeling. As a Certified Master Kitchen and Bath Designer through the NKBA, I bring both expertise and passion to every project. At Remodel Works, collaboration is key—we have an incredible team of project managers, technicians and CAD specialists who work seamlessly together to bring each client’s vision to life. That teamwork consistently results in exceptional spaces and many happy clients.
Over the years, my work has been featured in several design magazines, and I’m honored to have received six NKBA awards for Best Kitchen and Best Bathroom Design. My early sewing experience taught me patience, attention to detail, and an appreciation for patterns. In many ways, preparing a client estimate is like creating a sewing pattern, carefully piecing together all the components until everything fits perfectly.
What I’m most proud of, however, is giving back to the design community. I’ve had the privilege of mentoring more than 48 interns from San Diego Mesa College, helping launch many of their careers. As a member of Mesa College’s Design Advisory Board, I’m dedicated to supporting the next generation of designers and contributing to the future of our industry.

What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is creating meaningful, lasting connections, both through my work and within my community. Design is about more than just beautiful spaces; it’s about understanding how people live, what brings them comfort, and how to make their everyday experiences better. That’s why I’m deeply committed to listening to my clients, exceeding their expectations, and delivering spaces that truly feel like home.
Equally important to me is giving back to the industry that has given me so much. Mentoring future designers and serving on the Mesa College Design Advisory Board allow me to share my knowledge, nurture new talent, and help shape the future of our profession. At the heart of it all, what matters most is knowing that my work, whether in a client’s home or in a classroom has a lasting, positive impact.
