Daily Inspiration: Meet Matt Kirby

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Kirby.

Hi Matt, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was extremely influenced as a seven years old to: Odd Rods cards, The movie Yellow Submarine and my father’s Abstract Expressionism Art (sheldonkirby.com). At seven, he took me to a traveling show from MOMA called “The Machine”, it was surreal and captivated me. I graduated UCSD as a mechanical Engineer, then I invented Apples to Apples based on a conversation I had with my family in 1996. Since then, I have been able to focus my time on more creative endeavours. I created the games Picaroon and Shipwrecked. I had done web development with entropynation.com and did a documentary of the unique artist Fred Holle. I am currently working with Moxiebox (moxieboxart.com) in the quest to enable and inspire kids to fulfill their creative potential!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One is always one’s worst critic. This is a good and bad thing and the basis for personal reality. Shakespeare, Euripedes called it years ago.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My specialty seems to be “The Big Picture” and making connections of things. My decadesmatrix.com is a great example and I think a really useful learning tool.

Apples to Apples, by its very nature, enables and gives license to people to freely express themselves on a wide variety of subjects. This “tool” can be employed to help this country relate and appreciate one another. This is very important and timely. I’d like to see it used as framework, structure for public debates, discussions of all the issues facing this divided country of ours. We need to deconstruct and calibrate, too much is overt “labeling” that is counter productive.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Passion wins/sells. Every time. Passion is the most dense thing in the universe. The true connection to “Source”

Curiosity, playfulness and Imagination reign supreme.

Always look to nature for inspiration. The Universe is constantly talking to you.
