Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Hampel
Hi Morgan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in Minneapolis, MN, with 1 sister, 1 step sister and 2 step brothers. Went to school at Iowa State University where I earned both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering.
After graduation, I served just under nine years on active duty as a Nuclear Surface Warfare Officer in the United States Navy, eventually transitioning to the Navy Reserve this past August.
I co-founded Hammer and Hampel, a real estate syndication based in Minneapolis back in 2020 in preparation for separating from the Navy, where I have overseen the acquisition and operations of over 1000+ multifamily units across the Midwest and Texas and now an adaptive reuse hotel project here in San Diego.
Along the way, I earned a Master of Science in Real Estate from the University of San Diego, which gave me the tools to take my work in the industry to the next level. Today, I’m passionate about using my unique blend of military experience, education, and entrepreneurial drive to make a meaningful impact in my community and real estate.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not.
– Trying to be an entrepreneur while on active duty.
– Raising capital for deals during COVID
– Troubles with growing a start up
Here’s a good interview that I did a little while ago – go very in depth on my past.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a veteran, a son, a friend, a brother, and an entrepreneur focused on building strong relationships. I co-founded Hammer and Hampel, where we grew a portfolio of over 900 multifamily units across the Midwest and Texas without any marketing—just personal connections through lunches, coffees, and referrals.
I’m proud of the trust we built with investors and partners by keeping things straightforward and delivering on our promises. My background as a Naval Officer gave me the discipline and problem-solving skills to navigate challenges, and I bring that same approach to every project I take on.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I believe risk-taking is essential for growth, but it’s a double-edged sword. On the other side of fear and risk is often the biggest opportunity to learn and achieve something great. At the same time, taking risks recklessly or without the right people can set you back years.
I see risk as unavoidable, but the key is being calculated about how you take it and choosing who you take those risks with wisely.
In many ways, it’s riskier to stay where you are than to take a chance on something better.
