Daily Inspiration: Meet Noah Carlson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Noah Carlson.

Hi Noah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My video production journey began over 20 years ago, rooted in a love for skate videos, music videos, and documentaries. Early on, I had three pivotal experiences that shaped the foundation of my company. The first was working as a production assistant on a film in my hometown, where I encountered a toxic environment that nearly drove me away from the industry. It was disheartening, but it also clarified the kind of creative culture I didn’t want.

Shortly after, I interned with a small boutique film production company. The experience was transformative, and I was shown that filmmaking could be joyful, community-driven, and authentic. It reignited my passion for storytelling.

A defining moment came during a college film trip to Bosnia, where I saw firsthand how impactful meaningful storytelling can be. That experience inspired the name “Voda” — the Bosnian word for water — for my company. Water represents adaptability, flow, and resilience, ideas that guide both my life and the way I run productions.

Over the years, I transitioned from freelancing in various production roles to building Voda Films. That shift allowed me to see projects through from concept to final delivery while collaborating closely with clients to craft stories that feel real and lasting. Today our work spans tourism, lifestyle, and purpose-driven brands, all grounded in creativity, community, and a go-with-the-flow approach.

Interestingly, a lot of my inspiration doesn’t come from consuming traditional media — I don’t even own a TV. It comes more from music, community, nature, and artists like the Grateful Dead who built creative ecosystems rooted in connection and authenticity. That mindset carries into our productions: it’s never just about the final piece, but the energy, collaboration, and human experience that shape it.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, and I think that’s a natural part of building something meaningful. When I first started out, I chose to take it one year at a time, seeing if I could sustain myself without falling into a traditional job path. Each year brought the question: Can I continue this journey? There were concerns about financial stability, balancing creativity with business demands, and the ever-present uncertainty of freelancing.

From the outside, it might look like a consistent, smooth journey, but internally, it’s often a bumpy road. Like many artists, I’ve faced moments of self-doubt and the constant need to evolve. But I learned that as long as I keep growing as a person and putting out the right energy, the right opportunities and people will come along. The struggles have only deepened my commitment to authenticity and community, and ultimately, they’ve made the journey more rewarding.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a storyteller at heart. I specialize in capturing real, authentic stories and translating them into visuals that resonate. My work lives in that sweet spot between truth and creative interpretation—crafting feelings, moods, and scenes that bring a story to life.

I’m known for creating environments where everyone feels heard, safe, and free to be their most creative selves. As a director and filmmaker, I bring a unique energy to my sets—I always say, “the circus is here,” because there’s a fun, dynamic, and entertaining energy that infuses every production.

I’m most proud of the body of work I’ve built over the years and the personal projects that keep my creative spirit alive. These side projects, often unseen until they’re ready, fuel my drive and passion for what I do.

What sets Voda Films apart is that blend of heart, soul, and vibes we infuse into every story. It’s not just about the final product; it’s about the entire creative journey and the magic that happens along the way.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I don’t see strict divides between cities or counties. To me, Southern California is one vibrant, interconnected ecosystem. I love the ever-changing landscapes, the way the light reflects off the water, the creative energy in our towns, and the incredible filming locations. Raising my kids here means they can explore creativity and nature all year round, which is something truly special.

What I like least is the tendency to cling to stereotypes or divisions. I believe in breaking down those barriers and seeing our region as a unified, diverse community full of potential and beauty.
