Today we’d like to introduce you to Noelle Roth.
Hi Noelle, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started dancing when I was just 2 1/2 years old. I would watch old movies with Ann Miller, Eleanor Powell, Gene Kelly, Judy Garland, and Vera Ellen and I knew that I wanted to grow up and do that for a living. Even at such a young age, I knew it was what I was MEANT to do. My first love was tap dance, but as I got older, I started training in ballet, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, and pointe. My mom was a professional opera singer, and my dad was a professional jazz musician, so I grew up in a very musical household. I started singing and acting as a teenager, and then I got my BA in Theatre Arts with a Musical Theatre concentration. Since graduating, I’ve been lucky enough to have many opportunities come my way, both in theatre and in film. I continue to audition and train and pursue my dream every day. I truly love what I do, and I’m so excited to see what the future holds!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I was first getting ready to go to university, I was incredibly scared. I was beginning to doubt myself and think that maybe I didn’t have what it would take to make it in the entertainment industry. I decided I was going to try to be a “normal person” and major in a “normal person” thing, so I actually started out as a kinesiology major! I knew kinesiology wasn’t what I was meant to do, and I spent the entire summer before university worried about it. In my heart, I knew I had made the wrong choice, and it was actually making me physically ill because I was so unsettled. I ended up lasting 3 days as a kinesiology major before switching over to Theatre Arts to pursue my dream. I had known since a very young age what I wanted to do with my life, and I decided that I could not give up on that dream. I wasn’t going to spend 4 years of my life getting a degree in something that I didn’t really want to do. I’m so glad that I took the leap.
A challenge that I face every day is rejection. As an actor, it’s expected. You don’t book everything you audition for, and that’s ok! I know that what is meant for me will not miss me, and every “no” is one “no” closer to my next “yes”!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a singer, dancer, and actor, but I specialize in tap dance! Ann Miller has always been my inspiration. I’ve been lucky enough to study with many great tap teachers, and I’ve developed my own style along the way. I passionate about keeping this incredible art form alive! I’ve loved tap dance since I was 2 1/2 years old, and it continues to bring me joy every day.
I also specialize in singing jazz. Since my dad is a jazz musician, I listened to a ton of great jazz growing up. I would travel all around with my family going to jazz festivals and tap dancing with my dad’s band. When I was a teenager, I also started singing with his band, and when I was 16, I recorded my first jazz album. Being able to travel and sing and dance in front of a live audience growing up did so much to shape the performer I am today and I’m so grateful that I got that opportunity. My dad, sister, and I now have a family band called Euphoric Swing!
I’m most proud of the work that I continue to put into honing my craft. I think it’s really important to keep training and taking class. I’m proud of the fact that I continually put myself out there and audition, even when I’m nervous. It would be easy to let the fear of rejection keep you from auditioning and going after what you want, but you have to remind yourself that just by showing up to an audition, you’re 10 steps ahead of the people who stayed home.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
My parents, sister, and Nana are my biggest supporters. My parents help me pursue my dream in whatever way they can, and they never miss a show or a performance! My sister, Sophie, who also never misses a show or a performance, is an incredible photographer and cinematographer. She helps me create content a film tons of self-tapes. My parents, sister, and Nana are my biggest cheerleaders and I love them so much! My best friend Amanda is the most encouraging and supportive friend I could ask for. I’m so grateful to have so many people in my life who love and support me!
