Hi I am Paige!
Thank you so much for having me.
My passion for the beauty industry began as soon as I can remember. My grandmother, Noni, had a home-based salon for many years. I can still smell the perms and hear the sounds of the rollers being cleaned. She retired when I was very young, but her daughter, my aunt, got licensed during that time. She took over all the roller sets and perm clients, as well as built her own loyal clientele.
My cousin, who graduated high school, decided to continue the hair legacy. We were very close, and I would help in her salon growing up. I did everything from running errands to being the shampoo girl!
I’m sure you can guess that I graduated high school and went on to beauty school. I was awarded “most creative” at graduation. I loved vivid colors and textured cuts!
Life happened, and I took a long break from doing hair. I’ll be honest, the passion wasn’t there. I had a daughter at 21 and my second daughter at 24. I worked odd jobs, bartending, doing hair at home, and waitressing. This just worked during that season of life, but I wasn’t happy. I wanted to do more and feel creative again.
One day in 2017, I was scrolling through Instagram and came across someone microblading. Something just clicked, and I immediately googled schooling near me. Low and behold, there was a class in Chicago weeks away that still had openings. I spent the entirety of my savings account to make sure I could go!
I finished school and jumped right in. I have worked in salons, co-owned a salon with 4 other talented girls, and now I am at a local day spa.
I’ve been microblading now for 8 years and just got my certification for ombre brows.
I’m really excited to see where this new technique takes me.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
To be honest, I don’t believe any career is ever smooth sailing. Over the past eight years, I’ve faced numerous trials and tribulations. While these challenges may seem negative, they can also be opportunities for growth and change. Everyone makes mistakes along the way, and these experiences are invaluable in building a successful career. As you progress, you learn and grow, and your skills and knowledge develop.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in eyebrows, particularly microblading. Microblading is a semi-permanent cosmetic tattooing technique that uses a manual, handheld instrument with a blade-shaped configuration of fine, sterile needles to create superficial micro-incisions in the dermis’s papillary layer. This results in a hair stroke-like effect.
I’m currently embarking on my ombre brow journey. Ombré brows, also known as ombré powder brows, are a semi-permanent cosmetic tattooing technique that creates a soft, powdered look on the eyebrows, similar to wearing brow makeup. The key feature is the gradient effect, where the front of the brow is intentionally lighter and softer, gradually darkening toward the arch and tail.
What I’m most proud of is my commitment to continuous improvement, regardless of my life stage. I separate my work from my personal life, and I believe this is crucial for success. I’m also proud of my ability to connect with my clients.
What sets me apart from others is my strong client connection. I genuinely enjoy talking and making friends with people. Being a people person is just as important in the service industry as technical skills.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I I haven’t come across any books or podcasts that delve into the topic of permanent makeup. However, I do use Instagram quite frequently to follow blogs and other individuals in the industry. This platform serves as a great source of motivation and knowledge for me. Sometimes, observing 10 people performing the same makeup technique can be enlightening, but then watching the 11th person execute something unique can be a game-changer. I firmly believe that it’s crucial to watch and learn from various individuals within your industry.
