Today we’d like to introduce you to Pat McBride.
Hi Pat, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Music has always been a big part of my life, and I’ve been playing for more than 20 years. I grew up with a piano and guitars in the house; both of my parents played a little as a hobby and were big music fans. That environment gave me my earliest influences, like The Beatles, and sparked my love for music. I started out with guitar, and over time I added piano, bass, ukulele, and harmonica, anything that helped me better understand how music works and how it brings people together.
I began performing wherever I could, from small local spots like The Turquoise in Pacific Beach to community events, building a style rooted in Classic Rock, Blues, and my own original songs. Eventually, I developed a one-man-band setup so I could create a full sound while keeping performances intimate and interactive.
Alongside performing, I’ve spent several years working as a direct support professional for individuals with special needs. That experience naturally led me to bring music into therapy-style classes, where I’ve seen how powerful it can be as a tool for communication, confidence, and connection.
Today, I perform throughout San Diego, continue writing and recording original material, and occasionally work on music for film. Most recently, I worked on a movie called Clika, which was released through Sony and Columbia Pictures and is now in theaters nationwide and available to stream on Amazon Prime, Apple, and more. What I do is about creating shared moments, whether that’s on stage, in a classroom, an elopement at Sunset Cliffs, or genuinely connecting with people through a song.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like a lot of musicians, I’ve had to navigate the uncertainty that comes with building a career in this field. That means finding consistent work, wearing all the hats from performer to sound tech to booking agent to content creator, and adapting when things don’t go as planned. It’s crucial to learn from your mistakes in order to improve.
There were also challenges in figuring out how to make music sustainable while balancing other meaningful work. My role as a direct support professional has been incredibly rewarding, but learning how to give my full energy to both caregiving and performing took time, patience, and a lot of trial and error. Along the way, I’ve experienced a great deal of personal loss, including losing both of my parents. Music has been a constant source of healing, connection, and motivation. It forced me to grow not just as a musician, but as a person.
Another struggle has been staying true to what I do in an industry that’s always changing. Trends come and go, but I’ve always leaned into live performance, real instruments, and connection with the audience. Building that path in a local scene like San Diego takes persistence and community support.
In the end, those challenges shaped my approach. They taught me resilience, flexibility, and why I started playing music in the first place, not just to perform, but to connect with people in a meaningful way.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a performing musician who specializes in live, multi-instrumental performance. Most people know me for my one-man-band setup, where I combine guitar, vocals, harmonica, and live looping to create a full-band sound as a solo performer. I also build custom backing tracks at home by recording guitar, bass, piano, drums, and other parts myself, allowing me to recreate the feel of a complete band while still performing solo. My style is rooted in Classic Rock, Blues, and original music, and I focus on keeping performances dynamic, engaging, and personal rather than just background entertainment.
In addition to traditional gigs and weddings, a big part of my work involves bringing music into spaces where it can have a deeper impact. Through my role as a direct support professional, I’ve been fortunate enough to perform at music therapy classes for individuals with special needs, using familiar songs and rhythm to encourage expression, confidence, and connection.
Years of performing throughout San Diego have shaped how I approach live performance. What sets me apart is that I’m playing all the instruments myself, and I bring a lot of energy and excitement to what I do. I genuinely can’t help but bounce around when I play. It’s so much fun, and the mental challenge of putting all the parts together for every show keeps me sharp, focused, and fully in the moment. I’m doing a lot at once, which makes it an ADHD kid’s dream. That enthusiasm, combined with the layered instrumentation, helps create an experience that feels bigger than a solo act and keeps audiences engaged.
Any big plans?
Looking ahead, I plan to keep growing what I’ve already built while expanding into new opportunities. I’m continuing to perform regularly and refine my one-man-band show, adding new material and arrangements to keep things fresh for audiences.
I’ve loved the experience of performing at weddings and would be thrilled to broaden my wedding resume.
I recently got to do some music for a movie my brother, Sean McBride, wrote and produced called Clika, released through Sony & Columbia Pictures, which is currently in theaters nationwide and available to stream on Amazon Prime, Apple, and more. I was fortunate enough to go to the premiere with both of my brothers, Sean and Kelly, at the historic TCL Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on January 20th, 2026. It was such a cool experience to see it come to life. I’ll never forget that. I’m so incredibly grateful to my brother and everyone involved. Getting to do more work on movies would be awesome.
I’m also focused on creating more original music and developing additional backing tracks so I can keep pushing the full-band sound even further in a live performance setting. I would love to get some of my original music on streaming platforms so more people can hear it.
Another goal is to expand the music-based programs I’m involved in for individuals with special needs, because that work has been incredibly meaningful and I’d like to reach more people through it.
Overall, I’m looking forward to deepening my presence throughout San Diego, collaborating on creative projects like film music, and continuing to find new ways to blend performance, creativity, and community. I hope to keep growing, creating, evolving, and staying inspired along the way.
