Daily Inspiration: Meet Rachel King

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel King.

Rachel, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in San Diego and spent most of my free time dancing. I attended a performing arts school where I danced and did drama during the day and the went to ballet classes after school. Besides that I was the typical San Diego kid growing up in the 80s; beach days, playing outside until the street lights turned on, slumber parties with friends. I got a little burnt out on dance once I was in high school and focused on having a good time and socializing. I always loved cooking (and eating) so I did a lot of that in my free time, but never actually believed it could be a fruitful career.

I graduated from SDSU and went to law school for a year after that. Then it clicked that I would never be that great at something I didn’t actually enjoy it. I decided to follow my passion and enroll in culinary school when I was 24. I worked at a bakery on the weekends and once I graduated, always had two jobs. I was a pastry chef in restaurants and hotels for about 10 years, until I transitioned to the cannabis industry. I helped start Kaneh Company in 2015, by creating the recipes and product lines. My position and the company itself has grown exponentially since then.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No way! Every day in the cannabis industry feels like a week. A joke at our warehouse is “PIVOT!” because everyday we have to expect the unexpected and change our plan at the drop of a dime. The best laid plans are rarely adhered to, due to the ever-changing nature of our business. Whether is is licensing, regulations, business levels, staffing changes, interstate expansion, etc…..I always have my hands full.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am known as a Pastry Chef, which I consider to be an interesting mix of an artist, scientist, and manual labor. I have taken that knowledge and built the Kaneh Company brand. We are a California based cannabis edibles brand. We produce dozens of different products not only for our brand, but for other brands that we manufacture white label products for. As of now, our products are available in CA, MI, OK, and AZ. I am the co-founder and Chief Development Officer of our company. In addition to my main role as the creative force for the brand, I have my hand in most aspects of the business from operations, kitchen management, marketing, and expansion.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
That’s the million dollar question. Some people like to guess, but no one really knows. We will see what the political landscape looks like and whether cannabis will become federally legal. We take it day by day.
