Daily Inspiration: Meet Ryan Tesluk

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Tesluk.

Hi Ryan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My life story has been filled with challenges and pleasant surprises. At the age of 5, I was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, which is on the milder side of the Autism Spectrum. I thus had to weather many storms throughout my short life. However, my accomplishments I have achieved so far have been enough to prove my past adversaries and myself wrong. I am now a successful professional artist with a studio space of my own in Oakland. I will also be having my first in-person exhibit outside of Northern California in February 2023 (at the Hive Gallery and Studios in Los Angeles). I also obtained a BFA in college and have lived abroad. Most importantly, I have learned to love myself and be happy with my differences as a neurodivergent individual.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My biggest challenge has been overcoming my inner critic. While I have had to deal with a fair share of cruel individuals, the most hurtful voice I’ve had to face comes from within. While I am kinder to myself than I have been in the past, learning to love myself is a journey that will last my entire life.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a daring artist who paints sociopolitical commentary on magazine pages and other paper types. When I started painting post-college, my art was very political. In 2021, however, I decided to stop watching the news altogether for the sake of my mental health. While my art is now more based on pop culture, many viewers still consider my latest work to be political.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
What makes or breaks an individual’s chances of success is not their work ethic or connections. Instead, a person achieves success if they encounter at least one individual that likes them and has enough power and influence to give the former a break.
