Today we’d like to introduce you to Shonte (smijjysounds) Munguia.
Hi Shonte, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born in Seattle, Washington, and by age nine, my family had moved south to Texas. Growing up there for the next two decades, I discovered my creative passions early—performing in bands, writing original music, and immersing myself in photography. Those years taught me discipline and fueled my desire to take my talents as far as they could go.
In May 2023, I reconnected with a childhood vision—to make a living in California. I researched where I could stay, handed in my notice at the gas station I’d been working at, and loaded every possession into my Dodge Durango. That drive to San Diego was more than a move; it was a declaration that I wouldn’t let fear or uncertainty define my path.
Two years later, I’ve built a life that blends stability with creative freedom. I’ve found a job I genuinely enjoy, entered a loving relationship, and resumed my studies toward a degree. Most importantly, I’ve rediscovered the joy of making art—music, photography, and beyond—grounded in the knowledge that every challenge I overcame was laying the foundation for this moment.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Just before the pandemic, I endured the heartbreaking loss of my grandmother to dementia and watched my parents go through a divorce. My mental health spiraled, creativity dried up, and I stopped caring for myself the way I once did. It took time, but I eventually faced those struggles head-on, learning that resilience is crafted through confronting pain, not avoiding it.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a producer and audio engineer, I thrive on capturing and sculpting sound across an eclectic spectrum—hip hop’s groove, metal’s intensity, rock’s raw power, and the limitless textures of electronic music. Right now, I’m deep in the creative trenches writing and producing a new metal project, while also gearing up to release an instrumental album under my moniker smijjysounds. What truly sets my work apart is my relentless commitment to authentic self-expression: every session is an opportunity to push creative boundaries and discover fresh ways to bring my artistic vision to life.
How do you think about happiness?
Animals, pizza, coffee, beaches, San Diego weather, and being blessed with the support & patience of my loved ones.
