Hi Sydney, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My passion for airbrush tanning began in 2017 when I began working at a tanning salon in my area. I was educated on tanning beds, spray tan booths, and a wide range of wellness treatments before getting the opportunity to obtain my certification in airbrush tanning. I enjoyed being able to create and apply something unique to each new individual I saw. Whether I was spraying someone for prom, vacation, or even their wedding day, having the ability to make them feel so confident and beautiful in their skin left me with a sense of fulfillment. When the pandemic struck in 2020, and the salon I was working at closed down, I decided to purchase my own airbrush equipment with the hopes of starting something of my own. The silver lining of the pandemic, for me personally was realizing that I wanted to pursue being my own boss. I wanted to be able to provide the luxury feeling of a salon in the comfort of one’s home, and that is where You Glow Girl came to fruition.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I believe that any and every career path presents challenges along the way. To be honest, the biggest obstacle in this journey was myself. I had an immense amount of self-doubt for a while, which hindered me from pursuing and growing You Glow Girl. I was so concerned with what people would think and fearful that it just would not work out in the end. It took some time for me to realize that I was the only one getting in the way of achieving the dreams I had for myself (corny, I know). So, with a little can-do attitude and the most amazing support from my family and friends, I just went for it! I guarantee there will be struggles along the way, but I am ready to tackle whatever is put in front of me.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
You Glow Girl is a mobile airbrush tanning business that is based in Temecula, California, but services all around Southern California. I am a certified technician that specializes in providing customized airbrush tans in the comfort of your own home. Contrary to spray tan booths, airbrushing allows the client and technician to maintain control over the color that is being administered, to focus the color on just one part of the body (i.e., just having your legs sprayed), and to contour the body.
I believe what sets me apart from others is my attention to detail when it comes to each of my clients. As a technician, it is important to consult whomever I am spraying in order to determine what they would like to achieve with their session. What kind of occasion/event are they spraying for? Are they going for a more natural or dramatic look? In order for me to give my clients the kind of tan they want, these discussions are imperative. Furthermore, we discuss how they should prep their skin before I airbrush them and how to maintain their skin after in order to get maximum longevity out of their tan. Client education is important to me because I always want to make sure that I am providing the best service I possibly can.
I am most proud of my ability to make people feel comfortable in a situation that I know can be intimidating and vulnerable. I cannot tell you the amount of times I have had clients apologize to me about the things they find wrong about their bodies. My priority with my business is to be my clients’ number one hype woman. I want them to feel as if they can conquer the world with the confidence my airbrush tans give them.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
For me personally, Covid-19 truly put into perspective how valuable and precious time is. It allowed me to focus my energy on being present with family and friends and made me realize that life is too short to not be doing something that brings you happiness every day. If you have something that you are passionate about and are thinking about creating a small business, go for it! Taking the first step is the scariest part, but it has the potential to be such a rewarding pursuit.
