Today we’d like to introduce you to the Goth Collective
Hi Goth Collective, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
We started in San Diego just after the pandemic lockdown ended. The sole purpose was to help build and connect the goth community outside of the clubs and for all ages – for people who identify as goth to meet others, find community and support.
The organization has grown to over 4800 unique/organic followers on IG, over 45o followers on Discord and our Goth picnics have an average of 50-90 attendees every month (in San Diego). We have events and followers all around the country.
Our events that are centered around bringing goth people together of all ages include:
Goth Picnic, Goth Clothing Swaps, Goth Trivia, Horror Movie Pre-Screenings, Goth Roller Skating, Goth Karaoke and Goth DJ and band collaborations, We are also the first and only Goth Pride Parade Float in San Diego. Future events we are planning now are Goth Bowling, Goth miniature golf and something big for World Goth Day in May – stay tuned!
We are a registered non-profit organization with the intention to support goth businesses, local artists and LGBTQIA organizations.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been a relatively smooth path to success for us. The Goth community in San Diego is very supportive, involved and committed to the cause/purpose of continuing to build a safe and inclusive community.
The only struggle we continue to face is finding venues that are all ages and available.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Our “work” is frankly irrelevant.
Our passion is the Goth Collective – a non-profit organization that brings together a diverse, inclusive community of goth people & events. Our collective aims to strengthen & empower our community through advocacy, education, social gatherings & fundraising events.
Our ultimate goal is to build long-lasting connections & alliances within local communities & around the world.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Given the current political climate, we feel strongly that clear articulation of what the Goth Collective stands for and does not tolerate are vital. This may risk separating us from those with conservative views, but it is crucial to maintain a space that prioritizes safety for all members of our community.
This is our message: Goth Collective is committed to creating a safe, inclusive space for all marginalized communities, We support the trans and queer community, black and indigenous people of color, reproductive rights, immigrants and people with disabilities.
We stand firm in rejecting, racism, misogyny, homophobia, and transphobia. If you don’t share these values, our community is not the place for you.
