Today we’d like to introduce you to Tony Murrietta.
Hi Tony, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started photography as a senior who had just finished my seventh year in football. I had begun to question what it was I wanted to do in life, so at a completely random inspiring moment after football season had ended, I decided that I wanted to paint something. Very soon, I started experimenting with different forms of art, such as ceramics, graphic design, and then video editing. It didn’t take long for me to develop a passion for the visual arts in film production, animation, and in photography. As time went on, I started to take videos and photos of everything that came up as an opportunity. A few years later, a good friend of mine invited me to a dance concert at our local college; after watching the performance, I became very fascinated with the art of dance and have been photographing dancers as a hobby till this day. I currently am still exploring different niches in photography, such as cultural photography and conceptual photography. Photography has been a passion of mine that has always been something I have done for many years that has turned into a career I am pursuing.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Throughout my journey, most of the struggles I have faced came from when I was starting in photography. Having no prior connections or resources when first getting into photography, it was difficult to find opportunities and people who would be willing to collaborate. Starting with just an iPhone 6 for all my projects, it was challenging to develop the skills and experience I needed to progress my work. After saving and taking many opportunities that allowed me to eventually afford the equipment I needed, it has made it easier to overcome obstacles when photographing. I had consistently been networking and reaching out to amazing and talented people who have been willing and able to allow me to create and work with them. Although there still are some obstacles, it has been better now than it used to be after developing my style and communication skills.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in mostly dance photography as well as a bit of conceptual photography. I am mostly known for the way I travel to different cities to work with people and for my ability to combine the concept of dance and photography into a unique perspective. Something that I am most proud of is the way I have been able to connect and make friends throughout my journey. Something I believe that sets me apart from others is the way I try to emphasize my own perspective and style into my photos. I try to bring attention to the beauty in the world and focus on the subject and their environment. I believe this shows culture and a unique perspective to our everyday lifestyle in the most common environments.
Alright, so before we go, can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I am always looking to build my connections and look for new people to work with! Some ways in which people can support me is by engaging with my content and by reaching out to me with the interest of collaborating and discussing ideas. I am also open to referrals with different artist to explore new concepts and styles. There are many ways someone can support me, but even common interactions on social media are always appreciated!
