Today we’d like to introduce you to Trish Marie Dawson.
Hi Trish Marie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
In 2011 my young daughter put me in my place. She asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up and after a pause, I told her my dream was to be an author. She asked me why I hadn’t become one and after some excuses she interrupted me and said in her adorably authoritative child voice, ‘Mommy, you always say I can be anything I want when I grow up if I work hard, so why don’t you write a book?’ I started ‘I Hope You Find Me’ that week, knowing nothing except that my daughter was right and I didn’t want to disappoint my children. Since then, I’ve written and self-published two series, worked with other talented writers on collaborations, and proven to myself that I can be what I always wanted to be.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No roads in my life have been smooth, in fact writing has been a bumpy, winding, challenging road. But it has also been an exciting and fulfilling one. Ideas and writing themes have never been difficult but time management, parenting obligations, and physical and mental health have put dents in my momentum, and full on derailed me at times. Writing is still very much a passion though, and I have more stories to tell, so the road continues.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a writer, I love people-watching, learning about the human condition, and creating worlds that one can get lost in. My best-selling series (The Station) is about second chances and though the subject matter is darker, the dream is that readers find a light within the story that gives them some hope. I’ve heard from readers who’ve lost loved ones to suicide that Dying to Forget gave them some peace and comfort and let them imagine their loved one in a place where they could still do some good. I will never forget those real life stories and how my little fictional world impacted people I’ve never met.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Success to me was paying my bills with my writing money. And then it became important to me to give readers stories they truly enjoy, which comes with a certain amount of pressure. I’ve always said I write for myself but publish for my readers and even though I’ve taken a break from publishing, I still have projects that need to be finished and released. Focus, determination, and a love for writing is tantamount to any success my stories have.
