Daily Inspiration: Meet Uri Lopez Galvan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Uri Lopez Galvan.

Hi Uri, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The origin of Neighborhood Strength & Fitness started in the midst of the COVID-19 shutdown. Unhappy and expressive about how the local fitness industry was responding to the issue of health and wellness, I left my previous employer aiming to provide a service that would show true care and understanding to all those who walked thru my doors.

I have been an active member in my community my whole life immigrating here in 1998 from Ensenada, Mexico, I have created strong roots here in North County San Diego. Capitalizing on my growing presence, I started coaching both private clients and at local high schools (both teams and individuals). Some of the local high schools I have had the pleasure of working with are Mission Hills, San Marcos, El Capitan, Rancho Buena Vista, Del Norte, and El Camino. Now 3-4 years later since the start of my endeavor, I’m getting to watch many of my athletes not just compete but thrive in all realms of sports and fitness, from Division 1 colleges to powerlifting and Olympic weightlifting. I even got to watch on of my athletes claim an International muay thai title.

The reason were called Neighborhood Strength & Fitness is because I would have never gotten where I am today without my community. I believe that if you take care of your neighborhood your neighborhood will take care of you.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to opening our doors has been everything but smooth. I have learned in this journey that starting a business is not friendly to minorities from the streets of Vista/Oceanside.

A lot of the battles have been financial, proving that we understand the fitness industry enough to know who our target audience is and that the brand we are building one id a good one. A separate battle we face is in the industry altogether, trying to show the community that strength and fitness is more than a number on the scale but an investment in your well-being; as well as pulling the curtain on fitness charlatans on social media trying to peddle quick fixes and “Transformation” programs. In reality, nothing beats hard work and discipline. A day spent working hard in the gym gives you more than muscles and a good physique. It can increase your lifespan and better your mental health. Eat right, train hard 3-4 days a week for 60 min a day and you will live longer and increase your quality of life.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At Neighborhood Strength and Fitness, we specialize in just that, strength and fitness. Strength starts with your muscles but when you spend time in our doors we aim to better so much more. We aim to increase your general health by providing a special place where you can explore your own potential and grow roots in a community that has your best interest in mind. Don’t worry tho, your squat will also grow as well. When we talk about fitness now, we talk about your heart health, making you healthier for the day-to-day adventure also has major carry-over into your daily living. We want to empower you to take on whatever life has to offer; Climb that mountain, run that marathon, chase your kids. Free of doubt and worry.

We are known for quality training and genuine care for all out clients and athletes. Both in the gym and out. Whether it is a personal best in your deadlift or a promotion we want to celebrate you.

We specialize in all things strength and fitness. We have coaches qualified to help you train for a marathon or prepare you for childbirth and everything in between. We even house professional athletes and weekend warriors.

What sets us apart from others is our “never say die” attitude. If we don’t immediately know how to help you, we will figure it out and at worst case scenario we use our large network to plug you into someone that can. No matter the goal, we can help you get there.

The thing I am most proud is my wife. She’s a rockstar in all things unknown. She specializes in coaching women during pregnancy and preparing them for childbirth. Next to her would be the community we have built. The trust and work ethic of our members alone is inspiring. We are home to teachers, bankers, lawyers, CEOs, High school students, servers, fire fighters, etc. They all show up regularly ready to take on whatever we have to throw at them.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Firstly, find some you look up to and reach out, regardless of status. My best mentors have been found with a DM on Instagram. Worst case scenario they ignore you, but if they respond you have now opened the door to opportunity. Luck is a skill, hone it. Secondly, always be a student. Walk with a mind of learning.

Thirdly, be a friend to all that walk this path with you. You will see them again.
