Today we’d like to introduce you to Yung Curry.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hi, my name is Aish Kirawant (Ash Key-Rah-Want)! I’m an Asian-American Artist from San Diego, CA. I started making music in High School originally as a school project. At this time, I definitely was not taking music seriously until things started taking a turn at home. I started by writing small poems to express how I felt about certain struggles I was feeling at home and school. As I was going through High School I watched other artists and rappers being discovered and their whole lives changing from a single song.
I worked on my music every year and I would perform at any opportunity given. I performed at talent shows, summer camps, and even my college orientation. In 2020, I lost one of my dear friends who was also a singer/artist and it made me realize that before your know it, you may disappear and it made me question my reality itself. Who am I? What makes me, ME? At that point, I knew what I had to do. So I planned for months and dropped my first music video. My work paid off! A week later I was performing at a nightclub that I always manifested as a high schooler. I still have a long way to go. Recently I got into a terrible accident and surviving and having another shot at life has made me more hungry for my craft and passion for music.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has most definitely been a difficult journey for me. I feel that getting through to my parents was probably the toughest. Growing up in an Asian Indian household was difficult due to high expectations and strictness. I eventually realized that if I have a vision they won’t be able to see my vision because it’s my vision. I fund my own projects by working part-time as well as being a part-time student at a California State University. It is definitely not easy starting something from scratch. Sometimes no one will support you, sometimes no one will help you. But you as an individual have to support yourself. Finding the problems in your life and taking action. If I wanted to get where I’m at today I need to take action and put in the work. Staying optimistic was definitely a big help in getting through these hard times.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create all my music from home. I’ve actually never stepped foot inside an actual studio before! Being a college student I had to find ways to save money but still pursue my passions and goals. You definitely don’t see many Indian American’s in the music industry so I’m definitely creating my own lane and creating something no one has seen before. It was the beginning of last year when I started seeing results in my work. I managed to amass over 15k on Spotify with standout R&B and hip-hop tracks. “Dream” stands out as my most popular track yet, hitting over 11k streams.
I created these songs to get over a certain individual I had feelings for at the time. Another accomplishment this year was performing at a 21+ event as a 20-year-old! To me, that’s something only a slim amount of people can do. We also recently sold out a show with 600+ people. I and my team also traveled almost 700 miles to film a music video in Las Vegas as well. I funded these projects despite being a struggling college student. If I can do it, You can too! What sets me apart from others is my work ethic. I have my priorities with my music career straight. It’s where work ethic meets opportunity where success is born.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories was when my family was together and we used to eat dinner at the same table. Honestly, it hasn’t been the same since and it will never be the same. But it makes me realize why I push myself so hard. I want to make it in this career field for my family, my friends, my fans, and for me.
