Daily Inspiration: Meet Zak Brahmbhatt

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zak Brahmbhatt

Zak, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey into coaching didn’t happen by chance—it’s been shaped by every step, challenge, and triumph I’ve experienced in soccer. From playing as a goalkeeper to working with athletes at the highest levels, I’ve always been drawn to the mental side of the game. That passion is what led me to create Mindful Athletics.

As a Division I goalkeeper and a semi-pro national champion, I know the highs and lows of being an athlete. The thrill of success is incredible, but the mental battles—pressure, self-doubt, and fear of failure—can weigh heavily. I didn’t realize it at the time, but those struggles were shaping my future. I wanted to train my mind as effectively as I trained my body, but I didn’t know how.

In 2019, I earned my Master’s in Leadership because I wanted to understand how to inspire and guide others. That same year, I started coaching at Point Loma Nazarene University, helping our team win three PacWest Championships and reach the NCAA Round of 16. Around the same time, I worked as the Assistant Goalkeeper Director at San Diego Surf Soccer Club, training over 60 goalkeepers and overseeing development for players as young as 8 years old.

In 2023, I had the opportunity to work at The Keeper Institute alongside Jill Loyden. It was a dream come true to train NWSL professional goalkeepers and immerse myself in one of the most respected goalkeeper academies in the country. What struck me most during that time was realizing that even at the professional level, athletes still faced mental roadblocks. It became clear to me that mental performance wasn’t just a youth issue—it’s a universal one.

That realization sparked something in me. I returned to San Diego in 2024 to launch Mindful Athletics, a program built to bridge the gap between physical performance and mental resilience. I developed the GOAL Method, a results-driven system to help athletes overcome mental barriers, thrive under pressure, and perform with confidence.

Most athletes spend 90% of their time working on physical skills, but performance is 90% mental. My goal is to change the way athletes approach their development. It’s not enough to train the body if the mind isn’t ready.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey has been shaped by challenges that pushed me to grow as an athlete, coach, and business owner. As a goalkeeper, I struggled with performance anxiety and the fear of failure. The mental toll often outweighed the physical demands, and I felt unprepared to handle it.

Coaching at places like Point Loma Nazarene University and The Keeper Institute showed me that mental struggles aren’t just for younger athletes—NWSL goalkeepers faced the same challenges. Yet, mindset work is often overlooked or stigmatized, leaving athletes without the tools they need to perform under pressure.

Starting Mindful Athletics was its own leap of faith. Leaving a stable role to launch my business meant navigating doubt and convincing athletes and parents to prioritize mental training. But every obstacle reaffirmed my mission: to equip athletes with the mindset tools that unlock their potential, build confidence, and transform their performance.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Through Mindful Athletics, I’ve created a space where athletes can develop their physical and mental game. My work focuses on guiding athletes to build confidence, improve focus, and handle the pressures of competition. Using the GOAL Method—Grow, Overcome, Adapt, and Lead—I design personalized training plans that address each athlete’s unique needs.

I specialize in goalkeeper training, drawing from my experience playing Division I soccer and coaching at all levels, from youth athletes to NWSL professionals. I help athletes refine their skills while equipping them with tools to stay composed under pressure, bounce back from setbacks, and thrive in high-stakes moments.

Mindful Athletics isn’t just about sports—it’s about creating unshakable athletes who are prepared to excel on and off the field. Whether through one-on-one coaching, mindset workshops, or team programs, my goal is to support athletes in reaching their full potential.

What are your plans for the future?
At Mindful Athletics, the journey is just beginning. In 2025, we’re excited to reopen our books for mindset coaching clients, providing personalized support to athletes ready to elevate their mental game. The vision extends far beyond goalkeeper training, with plans to expand even more into multiple sports, helping athletes of all disciplines build confidence, resilience, and focus—essential traits for success both on and off the field.

Mindset coaching is the future of Mindful Athletics and what the sport world needs. So many athletes do not have the tools and support they need to flourish in the competitive environments they are in and that’s where Mindful Athletics wants to jump in so we can support athletes on the largest scale possible.

Collaboration is key to this mission. I aim to partner with coaches from all sports, sharing strategies to create a unified approach to athlete development that prioritizes mental health alongside physical performance. Together, we can change the culture of youth sports, reducing burnout and fostering environments where athletes thrive, enjoy the game, and develop a lifelong love for their sport.

Mindful Athletics is dedicated to reshaping what it means to succeed in youth sports. It’s not just about wins; it’s about supporting the whole athlete—body and mind—for success that lasts a lifetime.
