Daily Inspiration: Meet ZenZag

Today we’d like to introduce you to ZenZag.

ZenZag

Hello ZenZag, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
ZenZag is a six-piece collaboration of musicians stemming from different walks of life. Their journey started as an acoustic duo between Patrick and Aliyah Valdez. Using music as a way to connect with themselves and each other the project naturally grew, and with every member that joined the sound evolved. ZenZag could be described as Reggae fusion, but their sound is much more than that. With heavy influences from Miles Davis, Steel Pulse, System of a Down, Santana, and Erykah Badu, their live show takes you on a ride of where they have been and where they are going. The highs and lows of energy felt while experiencing ZenZag forces you to close your eyes, open your ears, and release yourself to the moment.

The meaning of the name ZenZag is “A peaceful change in direction” and they strive to embody that message in the moves that they make. They have a profound message within their music and are on a mission to connect and share their energy with many different audiences. They can be found playing in local and national venues, private events, and charity fundraisers. They are making noise in the West Coast music scene and will soon be on festival lineups and national tours. Keep your eye on the ZenFam they are making moves and are only getting started.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like many starting bands we have had our highs and lows but with every obstacle put in our path, we’ve grown closer and stronger as a group. We are a family and move as one and that connection amongst each other is part of the energy felt in our music. We are having a good time making memories and enjoying the small moments together whether that’s laughing at rehearsal, silly moments caught while recording, or big laughs on stage after each song. We truly just enjoy playing music and making art together.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We are proud of the fact that our live set consists of mainly original music. Here and there, we will throw in a hand-selected cover, but we always “ZenZag” everything. If we do choose to play a cover song, we reconstruct it and put our own fun twist on it. We strive to play original music as much as possible. Our heart is in the music, our story is in the music, and that’s what we want people to be left with. We want our fans to know our stories and the roads that we’ve journeyed.

Any big plans?
We are looking forward to releasing our first studio album in 2024 and ZenZagging our way across the US and beyond. We want to share our music with as many people as we can and continue to spread our message of “A peaceful change in direction.” We are enjoying every moment of this adventure we are on and are looking forward to many more nights on stage.
