Exploring Life & Business with Angela Quach of The Destiny Lab

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Quach.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am the Founder & CEO of The Destiny Lab, we specialize in business coaching and consulting. It’s been quite the journey to get to where I am today.

I had very humble beginnings, growing up as a first-generation Asian American in Columbus, Ohio to working-class immigrant parents. Looking back, I accredit my hustle and drive to my parents and stepfather, who showed up for work every day and truly believed in The American Dream – that if you work hard, you can have a better life for yourself and your family.

After attending The Ohio State University, I had a pretty successful career in corporate as a marketing consultant, but I wasn’t feeling fulfilled. I knew deep down in my gut I wanted to have a career that could help people live their best life and I was destined for it. I knew I wanted to become a life coach and entrepreneur in 2017. At the time, that dream was very far from my current reality as a marketing director and I wasn’t sure how to pivot my career. All great transformations come from great insight or pain. And the Universe showed me my worth through pain. I’ll explain…

Back in 2018, I used to be a people pleaser. I would always try to please my family, my friends, my partner, and my job first. Whatever they needed, I would give – time, money, love, etc. I never gave myself permission to do what I truly wanted to do. On the verge of burnout, my job demanded I work weekends, my boyfriend broke up with me, and I couldn’t pay my rent that month. Life slapped me in the face and I came spiraling down. I was fed up with being the victim of my own life! From that moment on, I chose to fight for the life I dreamed of…

I started small and the Universe has blessed me. In 2020, I took out $1500 and set up an LLC (the most money I had ever spent on myself), and started contacting my network for clients. That act of faith alone has been rewarding, I was overwhelmed with how many people were actually interested in working with me. There were many ups and downs, but it all makes sense when you know this goal is worthy of your soul. Fast forward two years later, I now have a successful business with a dream team. Everything I affirmed in 2017 has come true and more to come.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
There are no great rewards without great risks. There is no journey ahead without obstacles (that’s why it’s called a journey, not a walk in the park).

There have been many struggles along the way. Starting a business is not easy, no one truly teaches you how to become an entrepreneur. 2 things I learned along the way:

1. Hire slow, fire fast. – I would hire people because I needed the help and would not qualify them. This lead to a lot of miscommunication and timely training and re-training. I would “jump into bed” with these people and then would be stressed when I had to fire them because they weren’t what I was looking for. Your team is your culture. Take the time and due diligence to hire the right people in the right places, the right team will take you further than you can imagine.

2. Delegate. – Remember, I am a recovering people-pleaser and I was used to being the jack-of-all-trades. I would put everything on my plate and expect very little from my team. I would assign one task, I’d get it back with mistakes. I would roll my eyes and make all the edits myself because I thought, “I can do it better and faster”. Please take it from me, it’s okay to delegate and demand excellence. I had to learn to trust my team with an assignment, give them feedback, and hold them accountable for delivering up to my standards. I went from being Miss-Do-It-All to Miss-Trust-My-Team. In line with my first point, when you hire the right people, they want to do well, they have an internal drive to deliver excellence as well. And your job as the business owner is to create opportunities for your team to rise to the occasion.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The Destiny Lab is a business coaching and consulting agency specializing in transformation, innovation, and leadership. Serving a variety of industries, we don’t just help our clients reach their goals, we help clients ACHIEVE their VISION. We are a woman-owned, millenial-powered, and entrepreneurially-driven team with headquarters in San Diego.

Our mission is to educate, encourage and empower 1M people to be the hero of their own journey and live purposeful lives.

Something near and dear to my heart is a program powered by The Destiny Lab. The Badass Businesswoman Bootcamp is an interactive, virtual platform created to support women in business (entrepreneurs, business owners) by providing a Masterclass environment that provides resources to launch, grow and expand their business and business skills. BBB is a 3-month program where every Badass Businesswoman graduate will take away a pitch deck and business plan for their journey ahead. We are launching our second cohort in 2022, details coming soon!

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Give yourself permission to dream big. When you give yourself permission to dream big, you give the Universe permission to create space for it. You must plant your own seeds for greatness to grow.

My goal is for The Destiny Lab to be a $50M company. Currently, The Destiny Lab has been evaluated as a $1.3M company. We did that in less than two years! I believe that could have only happened because I prepared for this to happen. Now, what if I didn’t dream big? What if I planned for a $5K company? You will only go as far as your capacity, that’s why I KNOW it starts with your mindset. Your company is a reflection of your vision.
