Today we’d like to introduce you to Anita Bokil.
Hi Anita, we’d like to hear how your health journey began.
It all started when I was around 22 in my last year of college when I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). I had been on the birth control pill for almost 3 years at that point and once I went off of it, I began to experience a slew of symptoms I had never experienced before: rapid weight gain, excessive acne, and lack of menses (which went on for 6 months).
I was told by Western physicians to go back on the pill, which even then (knowing absolutely nothing about holistic health and wellness), I knew was odd.
Having PCOS and trying to manage it caused me significant stress and anxiety, which ultimately led me to many other problems. I was just throwing my body and mind even more out of whack.
Finally, several years later, I discovered Ayurveda. And when I did, I finally felt seen. I understood that my dosha, or ‘body type’, was extremely sensitive to change and I naturally have trouble feeling grounded, resulting in a mind that can spiral easily (when unbalanced). I finally realized that I had completely lost my mind/body connection, and it took years to shed all the information I had absorbed.
I feel so grateful now to be able to learn from these experiences and help others as an Ayurveda Practitioner. I seek to listen and understand, not only to any physical ailments but also to what is going on emotionally and mentally. It all connects.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not smooth, but all very meaningful. I struggled with re-establishing a mind-body connection, feeling alone much of the time (even when surrounded by amazing friends and family), and loss of confidence.
But everything happens for a reason. While it was certainly a struggle, I wouldn’t be who I am today if those things had never happened. And I certainly wouldn’t be helping others the way I am now, and hope to be more.
We’ve been impressed with Vitality Healing & Ayurveda, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am an Ayurveda Practitioner and have also studied and received certifications in Yoga, Meditation, and Pranic Energy Healing. However, my primary practice is Ayurveda.
In addition to hosting Ayurveda workshops around San Diego, I consult with individuals of all ages and backgrounds. During the consultation, which usually lasts around 1.5 hours, I listen to them, understand their current issues and concerns, and then conduct a full assessment to understand the ROOT of the problem so we can address it from there. These issues could range anywhere from insomnia, hormonal acne, uterine fibroids, or any overall feeling of discomfort or just not feeling like oneself.
My recommendations are very customized, as Ayurveda is definitely NOT a one-size-fits-all healing science. I may recommend different lifestyle choices, food choices, and exercises, as well certain herbs when necessary. I also may recommend the practice of Yoga, Meditation, or refer them to an energy healer. It all depends on what we discover together in our session.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
While I have an interest in Ayurveda and other holistic therapies, I have a very performative side, as well. I love dance, improv, acting, and I DJ for fun sometimes (VERY amateur lol). I love music. I tried my hand at the bass guitar… needed more lessons though haha.
