Exploring Life & Business with Beatriz Rivera-Cruz of Charla Collective

Today we’d like to introduce you to Beatriz Rivera-Cruz.

Hi Beatriz, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Charla Collective was born out of a deeply personal struggle. In the early years of motherhood, I was anxious and overwhelmed trying to raise a bilingual child. My family lived across the country, my spouse didn’t speak Spanish, and I couldn’t find any truly immersive Spanish-language programs for infants nearby. As someone who grew up in a Spanish-speaking home where pride in our culture was central, those first three years of my son’s life felt hard and isolating.

I longed for a community—something warm and rooted, where Spanish wasn’t just a language class, but a lived, joyful experience. That longing eventually turned into action. I opened a small in-home daycare, creating the kind of nurturing, play-based, 100% Spanish environment I had been searching for.

In 2025, Charla Collective expanded into a charming bungalow in the Historic Vista Village. This new space allows us to continue offering boutique Spanish immersion daycare for infants (ages 0–2), while also setting the stage for what’s next. We hope to soon offer seasonal Spanish immersion camps, family-friendly events, and parent meetups—all designed to build connection through culture and language.

Today, Charla Collective is more than childcare—it’s a gathering space, a cultural experience, and a celebration of language and community. What began from a place of loneliness has become something vibrant and shared—the kind of support I once wished for, now offered to others.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but it’s been a meaningful one. In the beginning, sharing my home with my business was incredibly challenging. As much as I loved the work, it was hard to have such blurred lines between personal space and professional space, especially as a parent.

As we grew, the challenges shifted. Balancing the need to keep tuition accessible for families while also paying my staff fairly and sustainably was (and still is) a constant tension. Securing our new space in Historic Vista Village was a huge step forward, but it came with its own set of hurdles—renovations were expensive, and the licensing process ended up taking five months, which was nearly double what I’d anticipated.

Marketing has also been tough. With a tiny budget and very limited time (I still wear a lot of hats!), getting the word out about what we do has been a real uphill climb. That’s why I’m so grateful for this opportunity to be featured in SD Voyager—it means the world to have our story shared and to hopefully connect with more families who resonate with our mission.

We’ve been impressed with Charla Collective, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Charla Collective is a Spanish immersion childcare and community hub rooted in connection, culture, and joy. We currently offer boutique daycare for infants (ages 0–2) in a cozy bungalow in Historic Vista Village, where little ones are nurtured in a 100% Spanish-speaking environment that feels more like a home than a classroom.

We’re known for creating spaces that feel intentional, personal, and rooted in culture. Our approach is play-based and relationship-driven—we prioritize emotional safety, cultural pride, and authentic language exposure. Every song we sing, every story we read, every moment of care is offered in Spanish, not as a subject but as a way of life.

What sets us apart is the way we center community in everything we do. Charla means “chat” or “conversation” in Spanish, and that’s what we aim to spark—meaningful dialogue, connection, and shared experiences among families. In addition to infant care, we’re growing into a broader collective that will offer seasonal Spanish immersion camps, parent meetups, and family-friendly events like Spanish Story Hour and Parents Night Out.

I’m especially proud of the way Charla bridges generational and cultural gaps. Many of our families are second-generation Latinos, raising third-generation children—exactly the generation where heritage language loss often happens. We provide a space that helps reclaim and celebrate that cultural connection. At the same time, our staff—many of whom are first- and second-generation Latinas—bring extraordinary care, warmth, and cultural depth to their work. In a world where their expertise is often undervalued due to language barriers, Charla is a place where they’re not only seen, but deeply honored.

Brand-wise, we may be small, but we lead with heart. Everything we do is rooted in authenticity, community, and cultural pride. For anyone curious about raising bilingual kids, wanting to connect with other families, or simply looking for meaningful, culturally-rich experiences—we’d love to welcome you into the Charla Collective family.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is that my children grow up connected to their roots. If, in the process, I can help other Latino parents do the same for their families, that’s a big win. I always say—if I’m already doing the work for my own family, why not expand the impact?

I left a very secure and cozy job to build Charla Collective, and it’s been anything but easy. I’ve poured sweat, blood, and tears into this dream—now I really understand that phrase! But it’s all been worth it, because I’m not just building a business, I’m building a life with intention. One where my children grow up bilingual and proud, and where I can hopefully create more time and flexibility to truly enjoy being with my family.

I believe in people over profit—and when it comes to Charla, it’s family over profit. Despite the financial sacrifices, I genuinely feel like one of the wealthiest people I know. My heart is full watching my kids thrive in two languages and knowing that I’ve helped create that possibility for others too.
