Hi Brenda, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey in the beauty industry began in February 2020 when I enrolled at Palomar Institute of Cosmetology in San Marcos. At first, I was drawn to esthetics for very personal reasons. Having struggled with acne, I wanted to understand how to truly care for my skin. Around the same time, I completed my first eyelash extension certification course, which sparked my passion for beauty and business. I quickly realized I wanted to build a future in the beauty industry.
I started and finished school during COVID which truly took a lot of resilience and patience! What was supposed to be a six-month program stretched into ten months with shutdowns and pauses, but finishing after such an intense year felt incredibly rewarding. While still in school, I began laying the foundations of my business through social media, and after graduating I invested in advanced lash styling courses to perfect my craft. In 2021, I officially passed my state board exam and became a licensed esthetician!
From there, I began taking clients independently while also working part-time at European Wax Center. That experience is where I completely fell in love with waxing! It became a true passion of mine alongside brows and lashing. I later decided to invest in a brow lamination course, which gave me the skills to elevate the brow waxing techniques I had learned up until that point. Not only did that let me bring a popular service to my business, but it also gave me the creative freedom to refine and perfect a service that became a major step-up in my brow game.
After gaining experience as a waxer, brow artist, and lash artist, I eventually took the leap to go full-time in my business as a sole proprietor. I’ll be honest, it was quick and impulsive in some ways, but ultimately it became the best decision I’ve ever made for myself. I opened my very first independent studio in 2023 at My Salon Suites in Oceanside and eventually expanded to a different location (still in Oceanside) in 2024. Today, with five years in the beauty industry, I feel incredibly grateful for the growth of my business and don’t have enough words to thank my amazing, loyal clients who trust me with their self-care. 💜
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have definitely been ups and downs, just like anything in life. Whether financial, personal, or simply unexpected circumstances. What has helped me most is always coming back to why I chose this path of entrepreneurship and business ownership, and then refocusing my next steps on how I can move closer to where I want to be. I remind myself to take things one step at a time, one task at a time, one day at a time. I feel like I’m always refining the business.
It’s easy to become overwhelmed because when you run your own business, there will always be something you could or should be doing. For a while, I struggled with staying frozen creatively when it came to promoting and marketing online because I thought everything had to be “perfect.” Over time, I learned to simply show up for my clients and continue to focus on their experience with me.
No matter how difficult things feel at times, my business has always been the thing that grounds me and, in many ways, saves me. As entrepreneurs, we often become so intertwined with our businesses that the path is rarely smooth. However, I find a huge sense of comfort in knowing that I am only growing and becoming better and wiser as a businesswoman and person. Knowing that I have the vision and determination to take my dreams further than I could ever imagine has made this journey incredibly fulfilling and purposeful.
We’ve been impressed with Glo By Brenda, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a licensed esthetician and full-time business owner of Glo By Brenda, where I offer a range of services including full-body and facial waxing, brow waxing and lamination, and eyelash extensions. While I love all that I do, my expertise lies in Brazilian and bikini waxing, eyebrow services, and natural lash extensions such as wet-set and classic styles.
I’ve always been someone who wears my heart on my sleeve, and I bring that same level of care and dedication into every service I provide. My goal is for every client to receive the best of me in my work and in the energy I bring each time they walk through my door.
What sets my business apart is that the experience goes beyond the service itself. I strive to create an environment that is welcoming, safe, and judgment-free, where clients can relax, feel cared for, and leave feeling even more beautiful than when they arrived. Every service is more than a transaction; it’s designed to be a personal, intentional, and elevated experience.
What I’m most proud of brand-wise is how my vision, standards, and energy have all become part of the client experience. My clients aren’t just booking a service, they’re becoming part of my business branding and community. Seeing the confidence and joy someone feels after their appointment never gets old, and it’s what keeps me passionate about what I do every single day.🤎✨
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Honestly, what’s not to love about San Diego? 🌞 One of the things I love most is the sense of community people create within their niches and interests, especially when it comes to small businesses and the support they give one another. I feel like this city has offered me so many opportunities to connect with clients and fellow small business owners who share my passion for beauty and self-care. It seems like there’s always an event or opportunity to network and meet like-minded people.
