Exploring Life & Business with Brett Bernstein of Gatsby

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett Bernstein

Hi Brett, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I had two key career roles before founding Gatsby: first, I co-founded a healthy vending business with my father, and then I worked in Product Marketing at Box, both pre- and post-IPO.

These two experiences gave me a wide range of skills that I consistently rely on while running Gatsby.

In 2016, as I looked to start my next venture, I came across a technology called ‘social media vending,’ which perfectly merged my background in vending and software. After several pivots and innovations, I decided to focus that concept entirely on software, and that’s how Gatsby was born.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Ha! I can’t imagine anyone running a business for 8 years—or even 8 months—saying it’s been smooth. There have definitely been ups and downs. Our biggest challenges have been hiring the right people and figuring out how to capitalize the business in a way that lets us maintain control and upside, while also securing the resources needed to scale.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Gatsby helps merchants own the relationships with their social media community, enabling them to convert Instagram followers into email and SMS subscribers.

Most clients initially come to us for faster email and SMS list growth. Then, they discover our range of innovative features and integrations with partners like Klaviyo, Attentive, Yotpo, loyalty programs, and more.

On a day-to-day basis, brands use Gatsby to run Instagram giveaways and campaigns that collect new email and SMS subscribers directly from Instagram DMs. They can also track sales from Instagram and sync social data with Klaviyo and other platforms. When followers tag the brand in UGC, it triggers automated email and SMS flows, further engaging their community. Gatsby not only helps brands scale their email marketing but also grow their community and ambassador programs effortlessly through automation.

No other platform offers this level of integration between Instagram and your email, SMS, and loyalty marketing stack.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
First and foremost, I love spending time with my wife and our growing family. I also get a lot of happiness from building the business, expanding our platform, and working with great clients—especially local SD clients.
