Today we’d like to introduce you to Caitlin Bigelow.
Hi Caitlin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up money was always a little tight. After my brother and I were born my mom wasn’t back to working full time. The thing that sustained our family and helped offset the mortgage was a tiny granny flat attached to the garage. My parents rented out that tiny studio to a student at SDSU.
I grew up seeing firsthand the benefits a granny flat (accessory dwelling unit) could bring to people.
Fast forward to 2017, when the first major ADU bill in California passed, and I saw this as an opportunity to help more people have the financial stability my family benefited from.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve heard a lot of horror stories of general contractors or designers doing shoddy work or not being able to complete a project. This is a lot of what inspired me to become a resource for homeowners and apply my professional background to make sure this doesn’t happen to our clients. We’ve applied a rigorous vetting process to all the general contractors, designers, and prefab companies we work with.
A fantastic general contractor is not a mythical creature! They are out there, and we help homeowners find them.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Maxable?
We’re on a mission to help one million homeowners with ADUs by 2030.
Maxable is an educational hub for all things ADU. We help homeowners understand the cost of an ADU, navigate the regulations, and source designers and builders for their project. We’ve helped tens of thousands of homeowners across California.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
There have already been massive changes in the ADU space from a regulatory perspective. In dozens of states, alleviating the severe nationwide housing crisis with ADUs is at the TOP of the legislative agenda. As States embrace consistent approaches to enabling homeowners to build ADUs, we’ll see an explosion of development.
Some other data points:
-The White House held a conference on how to encourage ADU growth nation-wide
-Fannie Mae rolled out a new financing product allowing homeowners to use the rental income from their ADU to qualify for a loan.
-California announced 100M in ADU grants (40K per homeowner) to help offset the cost of ADU development.
