Today we’d like to introduce you to Carrie Garlejo
Hi CARRIE, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My parents were refugees from Laos with my dad arriving first to the U.S. and my mom followed shortly after. I was born and raised in San Diego, growing up in the Linda Vista area before moving to Escondido in the early 90s. We didn’t grow up with much, but I remember my parents working hard and doing a lot of overtime in order to make ends meet. It was tough growing up with immigrant parents, as they have high expectations and little knowledge of the American culture. I grew up in a very strict household.
At 26, I was married with 2 children working as a waitress and eventually found a career in the Events Industry. I worked in catering, event planning, and rental sales. I was laid off right when Covid hit and ended up helping my parents at their store in which I ended up taking over in 2023. That’s how I ended up here.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not! Some would say, “Oh, you’re just taking over what is already in place.” However, I feel that’s the challenging part. Taking over a family’s business will have many challenges, because you will disagree the majority of the time about how to run the business. Growing up with Asian parents, they are very critical. Don’t get me wrong, without my parents helping me today, I wouldn’t be able to survive! Also, not knowing a single thing about running a business has its challenges. You’re learning as you go and doing a lot of research, all while trying to be the cashier, manager, buyer, & owner.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Rice Pantry?
Rice Pantry is your one-stop-shop for authentic Southeast Asian products. Whether you’re searching for unique ingredients to elevate your cooking or craving a taste of home, we’ve got you covered. We do specialize in Thai, Lao, & Cambodian foods, but we also carry ingredients from Japan, Philippines, Korea, & Vietnam.
Our story began in 2004, in the heart of our community, where we saw a need for a neighborhood market that celebrates the diverse flavors of Southeast Asia. From fragrant spices to exotic fruits, our shelves are stocked with the finest products sourced directly from the region.
At Rice Pantry, we believe in the power of food to bring people together and bridge cultures.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory would be going to the neighborhood Asian market. I don’t why, but I loved grocery shopping with my mom. Probably because she would let me buy all kinds of snacks. My mom wouldn’t buy me material things, like nice clothes or shoes. But she would spoil me with food!
