Today we’d like to introduce you to Dissaya Theerakaosal. Them and their team share their story with us below:
The beginnings of Shroomeats was rooted in the philosophy of bringing sustainability and nutrition to our food supply chain. We wanted to find an awesome plant-based ingredient that would fit that criteria and found that mushrooms were the perfect match. Shiitake mushrooms take 2-6 months to grow and are vertically cultivated, reducing water and land usage, especially when compared to raising animals for meat. Their potential health benefits are arguably more impressive as these mushrooms are cholesterol free, low in fat, high in fiber, high in Vitamin D, keto-friendly, and contain beneficial compounds such as soluble fiber beta glucan which can help with controlling blood sugar levels.
The initial inspiration for the product came from cooking for Dissaya’s vegetarian mother by using mushrooms in various dishes at home. After two years of recipe development and work done by the three co-founders Dissaya, Mary, and Pamas, they launched Shroomeats with the belief that delicious diverse dishes and sustainability can exist together through the use of mushrooms.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting your own business absolutely isn’t a smooth road. And even if you expect it to be bumpy, there will be many surprises! One of the biggest challenges has been the continual development of the product and understanding that a product is never 100% complete. We wanted to provide healthy food for consumers and thought our first product would be more than satisfactory. But the reality was that we needed to keep improving our plans to fit what our customers look for beyond the general ideas around eating healthy and being sustainable. A great example of this was the sugar used in our original recipe. It is quite normal for sugar to be used in many products where I am from, but in the US where sugar is mostly avoided in the conscious diet community, it carries a bad reputation and we had to pivot away from our first iteration and completely remove it from our products.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Shroomeats?
We built Shroomeats to be part of the environmental solution by providing a natural meat alternative option that uses mushrooms which are organically grown and sustainably harvested. But beyond the sustainability goals of our company, we are proud to be a leading meat alternative brand with products made with the most simple and natural ingredients. Shroomeats can be cooked in so many different ways by people from different cultural backgrounds. The patties, balls, and shred-it can be a substitute for many different ingredients in a multitude of cuisines. We want food to not only be sustainable and healthy, but also accessible for everyone.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Shroomeats is about to launch our 2.0 version in 2022. We have been working hard developing even better Shroomeats products and we are excited to share them with our customers!
