Exploring Life & Business with Donna Scott of Donna Scott Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Donna Scott.

Donna Scott

Hi Donna, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
During my childhood, I underwent a great deal of emotional turmoil due to unwelcome events and betrayals. I yearned for a confidant, a support system, someone who could comprehend and equip me in my pain. These were tough times, and I felt isolated in my suffering. However, as I grew older and became a pastor’s daughter, I realized that people were naturally inclined to share their struggles with me, and I found that I was able to help them. This was fulfilling, and I decided to pursue a career where I could be a listening ear for others to help them navigate through their pain and find the resources to heal. Today, I am a Marriage and Family Therapist, speaker, and author dedicated to supporting as many people as possible in their quest for emotional well-being and growth.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road to becoming a California-approved therapist was anything but smooth for me. The journey required me to complete 3000 hours before I could even apply for the final requirements for licensure. However, my biggest obstacle presented itself when I lost 1000 hours due to a technical difficulty, which caused me to lose an entire year’s worth of counseling clients. I was devastated and felt like giving up, thinking that I should find another profession. It was then that my husband posed a challenging question to me. He said, “I’ll support your decision, but did you not say that God wanted you to be a therapist?” After a lot of tears and prayer, I gathered myself and went back to work. I am so grateful that I didn’t quit because the results were worth the struggle. The opportunity to serve others brings me immense joy, and it would have been a significant loss if I had given up on my calling.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Donna Scott Therapy?
As a licensed marriage and family therapist in San Diego, I offer a unique blend of professional expertise and spiritual insight. With over 30 years of experience serving individuals and couples, my approach to healing is grounded in both evidence-based practices and biblical principles. I aim to empower my clients with the knowledge, tools, and skills they need to overcome their challenges and achieve lasting change.

My specialty is working with women who have experienced childhood sexual abuse or other traumas. Through a combination of therapy and practical tools, I help these individuals make sense of their pain, develop healthier coping skills, and build stronger, more meaningful relationships. My book, “The Tapestry of Trauma, Transforming the Tangles of Childhood Sexual Abuse into God’s Masterpiece,” is a valuable resource for anyone seeking to break free from the devastating effects of abuse and find healing.

As a speaker, I am passionate about sharing my knowledge and insights with others. Whether I am speaking at a worship service, seminar, conference, or retreat, my goal is to engage my audience with humor, dynamic visuals, and practical tools that they can use to improve their relationships and quality of life. If you are seeking to heal from emotional pain and build stronger connections with those around you, I would be honored to guide you on that journey.

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
As a private practice therapist, financial uncertainty is one of the biggest risks I face. Building and expanding a private practice requires both time and money, and there is no guarantee of a steady stream of clients. It can be scary and unsettling not to have a regular paycheck, but I am still glad that I took the leap of faith. Over the past two decades, I have challenged myself to step out of my comfort zone, experiment with new ideas, and learn new skills. One of the biggest risks for me has been marketing. I used to hope that clients would miraculously find me, but that all changed when a client told me that she didn’t come for therapy sooner because she didn’t know I existed. That was a wake-up call for me to leave my comfort zone and promote my practice. The risks are worth it because if I had stayed in my comfort zone, I would have missed the opportunity to witness others thrive and heal. While there is always a risk of failure, taking risks can also lead to growth and success.
