Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. LuRussia Cain.
Hi Dr. Cain, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
It all started with a conversation I had with my grandfather Jaffus Haley Sr. My grandfather shared with me the importance of my name (LuRussia Haley) and the legacy of our family. He took me on a journey that would open up my mind and would forever change the trajectory of my life. He shared with me about my ancestor Kunta Kinta and how he was captured and taken from The Gambia in West Africa. He was brought on a slave ship, the Lord Ligonier, for a four-month voyage to North America. His story eventually became a miniseries that has transformed the lives of millions. Roots is a television miniseries based on the novel Roots: The Saga of an American Family. It created a healthy dialog that changed my cousin Alex Haley’s life forever and opened the door for him to share our genealogy, his lessons, wisdom, and knowledge with the world.
I was captivated by what he had done, and it inspired me as a little girl to journal and to become a storyteller. The Roots soundtrack left me wanting more and it awakened a higher level of consciousness within. It was more than a soundtrack, but the beat, rhythm, and tempo of my life. I fell in love with music that day and I never looked back.
As my life progressed, I pushed my love for music to the side and focused on my daily task until I heard the Michael Jackson”Thriller” Album, and it reignited my love for music. I can recall watching the Thriller video on television and with every step, beat, sound, dance move, hand juster, and lyric it left me mesmerized. I knew that I wanted to write and produce music. I knew that I wanted to be in the music industry!
In 2012, after a time of prayer and fasting I was led to have a meeting with the “Junk Yard Dog” at Z90 Radio Station, Dr. Randall Cain. I shared with him what was on my heart and mind concerning creating my own radio show. During our meeting, I was encouraged to create Living Out Loud Broadcast. Living Out Loud Broadcast was created and launched in 2013. When the show aired it was syndicated on national and international platforms with over 2000 listeners per show. Living Out Loud Broadcast was created to help women to heal from the residual affects and effects of emotional trauma caused by life challenges. As a result, they will be able to live a whole, happy and productive life.
In 2013, Dr. Randall Cain and I began to meet regularly in attempts to create an internet radio station. In 2014, we created and launched Kingdom Broadcast Network. After many years of changing the world through music and great content Dr. Randall and myself created and launched several internet radio stations “Queendom Global Network, Jazz Club Radio, The Basement, and Covenant Gospel Radio. We are currently adding KDOM Tv to our media platform. On October 6th, 2022, my business partner and mentor Dr. Randall Cain passed away from Renal Failure. Due to his untimely death, I have humbly accepted the position of CEO and President of Kingdom Broadcast Network and its affiliates. To date, we air smooth jazz, old school r&b, and gospel music. My life has come full circle!!! As a little girl, I dreamed of the day that I would be able to empower others with music and today I am living my dreams.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it hasn’t always been a smooth road being in a male dominated industry. Some of the things that I have encountered are some of my male pairs believing that women are incapable of leading an organization, corporation or enterprise, but I love proving them wrong.
Unfortunately, some women in the industry have the same thought process. We have been conditioned to believe that men can only lead in this industry. And that is not true. Women have risen to the top and started to make a name for themselves by refusing to take no for an answer.
When you dare to do something different it creates conversation because it is something that hasn’t been done or something being done differently. When you are a world changer you have to be comfortable with compliments and criticism. You have to be comfortable with not being invited to everyone’s table. I have learned that difficulty isn’t always a bad thing. It can be a blessing and lesson in disguise.
By stepping into the role of President and CEO of Kingdom Broadcast Network it has afforded me many opportunities to share my story, empower women to use their voices, and use their gifts to change the world.
