Today, we’d like to introduce you to Gina Simmons Schneider.
Hi Gina, can you introduce yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
As a young adult, I had hit a crisis point. At that time, my dream was to perform professionally. Yet, I felt miserable once I was in that career as a singer/bass player. Nightly sexual harassment by drunk men, anonymous stalkers, and vandalism soured me on the whole enterprise. In despair, one day, I took a walk in my neighborhood. I saw a green flyer plastered to a wall advertising concerts and other community events. The flyer read: “Volunteers needed for suicide crisis hotline. No experience is necessary. Will train.” I needed a secure paying job, so volunteer work didn’t make much sense then. I took the phone number anyway. I passed the interview and 40-hour training and supervision requirements and became a hotline staffer. Eventually, I was hired full-time. Everything I have today, including my husband and children, stems from that decision to take that number and use my talents and life energy to help others. I felt so much happier than I ever did playing music.
It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Most of my struggles stem from economic hardships. I grew up in poverty. There needed to be a financial backup or a fallback position. Working three jobs, going to college, and struggling to make ends meet shaped my 20’s. Eventually, the economic struggles softened as I made more money, married, and had children. As a result of the battle, I’ve learned to respect the power of tiny changes over time. Many people hold back from achieving because they worry it will take too long. I’ve found that no matter how long it takes, It’s best to be tenacious and persistent when your goals are ambitious and achievable. It pays off handsomely in the end.

What challenges do you currently face that our services could help you overcome?
Start with ambitious goals that excite, inspire, and motivate you. Those goals need to align with what you deeply value. Then, make a plan and work on your plan. Every plan must undergo revisions and multiple adaptations on the road to success. I have a Goethe quote on my bulletin board that reads: “Whatever you can do or dream, you can begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.” Often, we fear the bold goals, stick with the safe and familiar, and find ourselves fearful, anxious, and frustrated. It feels envigorating to grow, persist, and change. Bold goals provide a road map for a meaningful and prosperous life.
