Exploring Life & Business with Ing-Jun Hwang of Unity Heal

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ing-Jun Hwang.

Hi Ing-Jun, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Before starting practice in Eastern medicine, I worked as a Chinese translator and interpreter since the 90s. Through my translation and interpreting work, I witness different walks of life and learned about their life stories, including triumphs and struggles. I felt that I wanted to help people more tangibly, not just as a message-delivering messenger, especially in the world of Western medicine practice. The more I work as a certified Mandarin interpreter, the more I desire to share the ancient wisdom I learned from growing up in Taiwan with people who are desperately seeking help to address their mental and physical distress. After undergoing an Ayurvedic rejuvenating detox treatment in 2017, I decided to shift my focus in my work to practice Eastern medicine by combining Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese medicine in the Western world. I grew up with access to both Chinese medicine and Western medicine in Taiwan, where these practices are readily available in hospital settings for everyone. I have taken workshops and have been enjoying studying Classical Chinese medicine since the 1990s.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Since this is my second career, I initially felt scared and uneasy about changing the direction of my work and stepping into the unknown. However, my family has been very supportive along the way, and I am fortunate to have encountered a great mentor who helped me learn how to run a clinic independently. I now believe the biggest challenge for me is finding more time for self-care as I start getting busy with my practice.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a Chinese medicine practitioner and Ayurvedic consultant. I received my doctoral degree in Chinese medicine and acupuncture, as well as a master’s degree in Ayurveda, in 2022; subsequently, I started my practice as soon as I am licensed to perform medical work.

My clinic name is UnityHeal. The branding idea is based on “Consciousness-Based Health,” which was greatly influenced by my meditation practice on Transcendental Meditation since 2012. I believe consciousness is the guiding force of all mental and physical activities. As Maharishi Mahesh Yogi has said, “Unity is finding harmony in diversity.” In this diverse society we live in, which reflects the diversity of our physiological systems, I believe that finding harmony is the key to achieving perfect health in body, mind, and spirit.

Growing up in Taiwan, my primary education and cultural background were deeply rooted in the ideology of Traditional Chinese Culture, which encompasses Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism. What sets me apart from other Eastern medicine practitioners here in the Western world is my advantage of being a native Chinese speaker. I can read and comprehend classic Chinese medicine literature, incorporating its essence into my practice and offering an authentic, traditional style that has been time-tested for thousands of years. My mission is to help people discover their potential and activate self-healing power by empowering and encouraging them to recognize their abilities to self-care and self-healing. Through core work on their mental-emotional issues that cause most of the physical imbalance, I aim to help people relieve physical pain by releasing the emotional pain. As the ancient Chinese seers told us, all diseases start from the heart/mind. By addressing issues and balancing mindset, a personal pain can be resolved and relieved. I offer acupuncture, moxa, cupping, GuaSha, and TuiNa (a form of manual therapy that is meridian-focused to open up channels and invigorate Qi, “life force energy,” and blood flow)

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
I’ve learned how to recognize my own feelings and patients’ subtle responses during and after the treatment processes. They are the clues for further improvement of my practice and my own personal growth. I also learned that everyone who comes through my clinic doors is a teacher and a reflector who helps me elevate my consciousness level and medical skills to serve others better each day.
