Exploring Life & Business with Jackie Chapman of Back Country Finds

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackie Chapman.

Hi Jackie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In 1997 I heard about this new web site called eBay where people were selling antiques and collectibles . My husband Darryl had been a collector of vintage movie posters and antiques for years, so we thought eBay would be a great place to resell the things he had been collecting.
We got our first PC that year and created an eBay account. At first I just bought things on eBay. It took a little while to learn the listing and shipping but I eventually created an eBay store called Back Country Finds.
It has been a joy to be able to work from home and sell the great things Darryl finds. There have been a lot of changes with eBay in 28 years but I still love it and continue to be amazed at the reach eBay has to bring buyers and sellers together.
Not too long ago, Darryl bought a painting at a yard sale for $2 and it sold on eBay for almost $5000!! You gotta LOVE it!
In the last couple of years I have done some volunteer work with Prison Fellowship Angel Tree.
Angel Tree is a program where local churches and organizations buy
Christmas gifts for children on behalf of their incarcerated family member.
Last year our church took on some children that were out of the state.
When I received the email stating they needed boxes to ship all the packages, it was a joy to volunteer my eBay shipping room and supplies to help box up all those gifts.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No. Learning how to shipping things is so much a part of eBay. How to package things. Using the right carrier, ect.
I’ve had things break.
I’ve mixed up packages, UGH! What a mess that is!
I’ve received huge extra fees from UPS due to the box size being incorrect. Ouch!
I’ve had people say they never received their package when UPS shows it as delivered.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Back Country Finds?
Darryl has a talent for finding unusual things or things people are looking for. It’s my job to sell them.
What I want to be known for in my business, is great customer service. I treat people the way I would want to be treated.

We live in and LOVE San Diego’s Back Country.
In 2019, we remodeled our little guest house and put it on Airbnb. We call it, The Back Country Retreat.
We are a Super Host and in the top 5% of homes on Airbnb as a Guest Favorite. Our Retreat is known as a peaceful quiet place to get away from the city and enjoy nature.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to me is when my priorities are in order and goals are met.
