James Hickey is the Founder of SD Networking Events, launched in 2021 to connect business owners, entrepreneurs, and startups through impactful networking experiences across San Diego. With over 18 years of experience in digital marketing and business development, James has built one of San Diego’s fastest-growing business networking communities, hosting 36+ events annually including mixers, expos, showcases, and summit events. In 2008, James founded JMH Marketing Group, a digital marketing agency specializing in lead generation, Google Ads, video marketing, social media strategy, and local business growth. His passion is helping businesses expand their reach, build meaningful connections, and create long-term growth opportunities.
Starting in June 2021, SD Networking Events was created. They now host 36+ Business Networking Events here in San Diego and Oceanside.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My Digital Marketing career that stared in 2008 has been pretty smooth. The main obstacle I had to overcome was COVID. I lost 3/4 of my clients since they had to close and didn’t need Marketing. But what came out of COVID was me starting SD Networking Events because nobody was hosting anything, so I threw my hat in the ring. Started SD Networking in 2021 with 1 little mixer and now we host 36+ events annually.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I’m a Tournament Chess Player and played 8+ years at the San Diego Chess Club at Balboa Park.
