Exploring Life & Business with Jennifer Lipa of Alpine Jiu Jitsu Academy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Lipa

Hi Jennifer, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Alpine Jiu Jitsu was founded and opened its doors in July 2016, starting as a dream—a place where children and families could train together in a welcoming environment. The goal was to create more than just a typical jiu-jitsu gym or “man cave” but rather a community where entire families could feel at home. Founder Professor Frank, a longtime Alpine resident, and I, also a local, shared this vision.

My journey into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) began when my daughters joined Alpine Jiu Jitsu. Watching their growth and transformation inspired me to step onto the mats myself, and I quickly developed a passion for the art. With a background in business management—including roles at Harrah’s Rincon Casino, the Department of Defense, and COACH I saw an opportunity to contribute beyond just training. As my involvement grew, I was offered a position as Gym Manager, Partner, and Owner, and I embraced the chance to help shape Alpine Jiu Jitsu’s future.

What started as a small dream has become a reality families training together, husbands and wives on the mats in our adult classes while their children grow in our youth programs. Today, I work alongside our world-class coaches to support the gym’s expansion, membership engagement, and community outreach. Seeing the impact of Jiu-Jitsu on people of all ages, from kids to veterans, is incredibly rewarding. Alpine Jiu Jitsu is more than just a gym it’s a family, and I’m proud to be part of its journey.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like any business, Alpine Jiu Jitsu has faced its share of challenges. The road hasn’t always been smooth, but each struggle has shaped us into the strong community we are today.

One of the biggest hurdles was establishing ourselves in a small town and building awareness about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Unlike larger cities with established martial arts communities, we had to educate people on what BJJ is and how it benefits individuals and families. Gaining trust was crucial, and word of mouth became our biggest advertisement. Our members’ experiences and recommendations played a key role in growing our gym, proving that we were more than just another fitness facility we were a place where people could train, connect, and support one another.

Another challenge came with growth. As membership increased, so did the need for more space, better scheduling, and additional instructors. Moving to a new location was a huge step, requiring financial planning, construction, and ensuring our members felt at home in the transition.

COVID-19 also posed a significant challenge. Like many businesses, we had to navigate shutdowns, restrictions, and uncertainty. Keeping the gym afloat while prioritizing the health and safety of our members was a balancing act. Thankfully, our community stood by us, and we emerged stronger.

Through every challenge, our commitment to our students and their families has remained our driving force. The struggles have only reinforced why we started to provide a space where people can train, grow, and support one another on and off the mats.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Alpine Jiu Jitsu Academy ?
Alpine Jiu Jitsu is more than just a gym it’s a community-driven academy dedicated to providing high-quality Jiu-Jitsu training for all ages and skill levels. We specialize in creating a welcoming, family-friendly environment where everyone, from beginners to experienced practitioners, can train, grow, and feel supported.

What sets us apart is our strong emphasis on community. We aren’t just a training facility; we’re a second home to our members. Many gyms have a tough, intimidating atmosphere, but we focus on making everyone feel welcome whether you’re a child stepping onto the mat for the first time, a parent looking to train alongside your family, or an adult seeking a new fitness journey. Our goal is to make Jiu-Jitsu accessible to everyone, regardless of background or experience.

We’re proud to offer a variety of programs, including youth and adult classes, self-defense training, women’s-only classes, private lessons, and seasonal camp programs. Additionally, we support law enforcement, military personnel, and veterans through our affiliations with the Adopt A Cop Foundation and the We Defy Foundation. We also work closely with local schools, offering after-school programs and community events.

Beyond training, we believe in building strong individuals both on and off the mats. We offer scholarships to help make Jiu-Jitsu accessible to more families, and our reading program rewards children for sharpening their minds, not just their Jiu-Jitsu skills. We are committed to ensuring our members grow into outstanding citizens within the community, reinforcing the values of respect, discipline, and personal responsibility. We’ve enjoyed watching our youths grow, and some have now become part of our staff, continuing the legacy and values they learned as students.

One of our biggest accomplishments as a brand is the loyalty and trust we’ve built within our community. Word-of-mouth has been our biggest advertisement, and seeing families train together, students gain confidence, and our membership continue to grow is incredibly rewarding.

For anyone looking for a place that values more than just competition where respect, discipline, and personal growth are at the core Alpine Jiu Jitsu is the place to be. We invite anyone interested to come in, try a class, and experience what makes our gym so special.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
For anyone just starting out, my biggest piece of advice is to be patient and trust the process. Jiu-Jitsu is a journey, not a race. It’s easy to feel frustrated when things don’t click right away, but progress comes with consistency. Keep showing up, and you’ll be amazed at how much you grow both on and off the mats.

Another important lesson is to leave your ego at the door. Everyone starts as a beginner, and the best way to improve is to embrace learning. Don’t compare yourself to others; focus on your own progress. Some days will feel like breakthroughs, while others will be humbling that’s all part of the experience.

I also wish I had known how much Jiu-Jitsu is about more than just technique. It teaches discipline, mental resilience, and problem-solving. You learn to stay calm under pressure and push through challenges, which translates to everyday life. The bonds you form with your training partners also make this journey special.

Finally, don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek guidance. Your coaches and teammates are there to help. Surround yourself with a supportive community, and you’ll find that Jiu-Jitsu becomes more than just a sport it becomes a way of life.
