Exploring Life & Business with Jennifer Tandarich of Four Seasons Fairytale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Tandarich.

Jennifer Tandarich

Hi Jennifer, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have had a passion for hair and helping others for countless years. Beauty, glamour, makeup… those had to grow on me.

I graduated college as a Division 1 softball Catcher/1B, 1st team All-western Region DH, with a psychology degree in 2003, and I wanted to attend Cosmetology school after. Knowing that I had a passion for making others feel beautiful physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually, I felt this was a path I could take to define them all. On the other hand, I wanted to find freedom for myself down the road if I went on to have a family of my own. Hairstyling seemed to fit the mold for all the above, so I took the chance.

I realized I would need to make changes in my life. Working as a loan officer in Real Estate, where $25,000 checks could easily be the norm, would no longer suffice, as it did not bring me happiness. So, I started searching. First, inside myself. If I had to work for minimum wage, I would be happy, and that I was.

I set out and found myself a managerial position to learn the back end of the salon industry while I went to school at night. I was hired at a wonderful salon in Del Mar and found, months later, that an apprenticeship program was a better suit for me than school. The owners of the salon, Abbie Kaplan and David Linde, were kind enough to give me the opportunity to go through an apprenticeship program instead. Meanwhile, I would also train in their assistant program and continue to help manage their salon and store, all at the same time.

This taught me teamwork, management skills, efficiency, leadership, and excellent communication skills. It provided me with a head start in our industry by placing me in front of others, putting me on the floor with extensive training, expert knowledge, and by growing my customer base prior to those in cosmetology school. Cosmetology students learn for 1600 hours while I learned for 3200 hours. I also had the opportunity to attend product knowledge courses in the salon, continuing education classes were provided, also. These included styling, cutting, color, Brazilian blowout, keratin treatments, extensions, makeup, facials, brows, and Yuko Hair Straightening. I felt truly prepared to be on the floor the day I tested out, in the salon, and with the Board of Cosmetology.

The greatest experience began in the salon for me with product knowledge. Product knowledge is the foundation to everything I create, and my variety of skills today are not limited to hair styling, hair extensions, haircuts, and hair color alone because I feel that one who is passionate about something could never stop learning and never stop creating something beautiful.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Hairstyling hasn’t always been easy. Yet, discovering what I enjoy the most has allowed me to create and grow into what I have become today. For this, I am grateful. On New Year’s Eve of 2023, I launched www.fourseasonsfairytale.com. This allowed me to branch out and have other hair stylists and makeup artists in the area join me, along with open an online store.

Sometimes, we see things one way, and God wants us to go in another, to grow. Therefore, by placing my trust in Him, in order to work with others outside of a salon, as well as, in a salon, I have been able to develop a simple and sophisticated online, service shop, which I am thankful for.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business.
