Today we’d like to introduce you to Karlin Vance.
Hi Karlin, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I didn’t set out to own a design firm right away—it started with a love of creating spaces that feel both beautiful and functional. Early on, I found myself helping friends and family reimagine their homes, and word of mouth quickly spread. What began as small projects grew into larger remodels and new construction collaborations, and before long I realized this passion could become more than a side interest—it could be a business.
I officially launched my firm to bring a thoughtful, professional approach to design—combining creativity with process, and style with structure. Over time, I’ve built relationships with trusted builders, architects, and vendors, and together we’ve delivered homes that reflect each client’s lifestyle while elevating the everyday experience of living in them.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Having your own business is never a smooth road! At first, I felt like I had to say yes to every project, even if it was too small, under budget, or not aligned with my vision. But those projects and relationships I made helped build where I’m at today. Also many people don’t understand the behind-the-scenes work of interior design (drawings, sourcing, project management, contractor coordination). Educating clients while still trying to feel confident in your pricing when my business was new was a struggle.
As you know, we’re big fans of Vance Design Studio. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I run a boutique interior design firm based in San Diego that specializes in new construction, large-scale remodels, kitchens, and bathrooms. My work blends California coastal influences with organic modern details—think layered neutrals, natural stone, warm wood tones, and timeless design choices that feel elevated but approachable.
What sets my firm apart is the balance of creativity and process. I’m deeply detail-oriented—I don’t just pick finishes, I create full design packages: cabinetry drawings, tile layouts, fixture schedules, and everything a builder or homeowner needs to bring a vision to life. I also collaborate closely with trusted builders and architects, which helps ensure that projects run smoothly and that design intent is carried through every stage.
I’m known for creating thoughtful, livable luxury—spaces that not only look beautiful in photos but also make everyday living feel special. Clients often tell me they feel more at home in their homes once we’re finished, because the design reflects their lifestyle while still elevating it.
I’m proud that my brand has earned trust with both clients and industry partners. Builders and architects continue to refer me to their high-end clients, which I see as the ultimate compliment—it means they know I’ll deliver both vision and execution at the highest level. I’m also proud of branching into digital design boards and curated shoppable looks that make great design more accessible, no matter where you live.
Whether you’re planning a ground-up custom home, a transformative remodel, or simply looking for curated inspiration, my firm offers services that fit the scope of your project. From full-service design packages with detailed drawings and specifications, to digital mood boards with shoppable links, the goal is always the same: to help you create a space that feels like you—beautiful, timeless, and thoughtfully designed.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that designing beautiful spaces is only half the job—building trust and relationships is the other half. Early in my journey, I thought the drawings, mood boards, and finishes would speak for themselves. But I quickly realized that communication, setting clear expectations, and creating a smooth client experience are just as important as the design itself.
I’ve also learned that not every project is the right fit—and that’s okay. Saying no to work that doesn’t align with my brand, my values, or my client experience has allowed me to create room for the projects and partnerships that truly light me up. That lesson not only protected my energy, but it also helped my business grow in the right direction.
