Exploring Life & Business with Luis Garcia of High Level Investments

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luis Garcia.

Hi Luis, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Well, my story begins in Mexico, where I was born. I come from very humble beginnings. At a very young age, my parents migrated to the United States and brought me with them. This is where I grew up. I’ve lived here in multiple places such as Salt Lake City, UT, Huron, CA, Lemoore, CA, and now San Diego, CA. I have two brothers, and I’m the oldest. I also have two handsome huskies. I’ll show you guys a picture later.

My very first job was selling jello from door to door when I was 8 years old which I think is where I got my first taste of entrepreneurship. I remember how I used to get up at 6 am (two hours before school), got ready, and carried a tray full of jello. I went door-to-door offering them until I sold out. At that moment in time, I hated doing it because I didn’t like waking up early but thanks to that I learn a valuable lesson about discipline and sales. FYI this was in Mexico.

My first real job was at the age of 16 years old picking onions in the fields of Central California. Now that job sucked! The hours sucked, the pay sucked, and the conditions sucked. Imagine spending 8-10 hours under the beaming sun on a hot summer day. I have the utmost respect for the people in the Central Valley doing this type of labor. I can say that it’s not an easy job but sometimes you have to do what you have to do to get by. After a couple of years of doing this type of labor, I learned what hard work is and this wasn’t what I wanted for myself or my family.

That’s when I turned to higher education. A man once told me, “Earn with your mind, not with your time.” Picking fruits and vegetables took a lot of time and energy and didn’t bring me much fruition. I was tired of it, and it looked like a dead end to me. I did some research and enrolled in classes at my local community college. I took community college seriously and spread my influence on campus. I got to know as many people as I could and made great connections. By the end of my stay, I knew all my professors, passed all my classes with A’s and B’s, created a business entrepreneurship club with my fellow classmates, and was part of the Associated Student Body on campus.

A couple of months before my CC graduation, my now business partner, John, invited me to a real estate seminar. I agreed to go with him and see what they had to offer. After two days at that seminar, my business partner and I decided to start our business – HIGH-LEVEL INVESTMENTS. In those two days, they reignited that entrepreneur fire in me that was first lit when I was eight. I had a vision and became obsessed with creating a successful real estate business. I finished my Associate’s Degree in Business Administration and transferred to San Diego State University to pursue my Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with Emphasis in Real Estate.

At SDSU, I met some amazing people that propelled me to where I am today. I took advantage of every opportunity offered to me and did the most with it. During school, I picked up internships and jobs and made High-Level Investments LLC legit. All while being a full-time student. The discipline and hard work I learned as a child really kicked in here. Nothing was easy, but I never expected it to be. I finished my degree with some deals under my belt, my real estate license, and my own business.

Things change once you start earning with your mind.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
N0, nothing in my life has been a smooth road for me. Everything has been a challenge. When you are a first-generation anything, you don’t have much support. Problems arise, and you have no one to turn to for advice or help because no one has done it. It’s up to you to find an answer. I think that has always been my biggest challenge.

If you’re a first-generation anything, I suggest you make connections with people that have done what you want to do. People are always willing to help if you ask for help. A lot of people have helped me because I don’t mind reaching out.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Yes, learn to adapt. COVID-19 changed a lot of things in my industry and other industries too. For instance, in my business, we do a lot of face-to-face interactions, but COVID impeded that, so we decided to go digital. Virtual tours, Zoom calls, and other methods helped us overcome that hurdle.
