Today we’d like to introduce you to Malinda Bloch
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Well. It’s been a wild ride, that’s for sure. My story started 41 years ago right here in sunny San Diego. I was born in Chula Vista, lived a crazy and somewhat traumatic childhood, (what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger amirite). I moved to Santee when I was 11 and lived there until my 20’s. From there, I bopped all over the county, from Lemon Grove to Clairemont to La Jolla. I’ve been in La Mesa for 4 years now and it’s been my absolute favorite city in all of San Diego. It is truly a hidden gem.
I’m also a wife and mama, and I love to hike, cook, read, create, research, write, eat tacos, and the list goes on.
I also help people realize their real estate goals. I turned a lifelong passion into a career and am now your local real estate specialist. Not only can I help you buy or sell a house, I can tell you where all the best beaches and taco shops are. Market stats? I got you. Financing secrets? Let’s go. Need the best lender/insurance agent/electrician/architect/contractor/inspector…etc? I know them. I’m also kinda funny with a great sense of humor. Lil bit weird, but the funny part makes up for it.
Before real estate, I was a lot of things. I’ve been working since the moment I legally could, and even a little before that when my dad would let me come to work with him and help collate booklets in his printing shop. Since then, I’ve had so many different jobs over the years ranging from Taco Bell to sunday school teacher, to wedding coordinator, to restaurants and hospitality, to banks, offices, sales and more. In my 30’s I settled into law – I thought I wanted to be an attorney, and then maybe just a Paralegal, to maybe…not law at all. So I left my job in 2020 and decided to start a coffee shop business, and I quickly realized I don’t actually love coffee that much. Woops. I love drinking coffee, and I loved my vision for community, women-empowerment, and building a business, but I didn’t really love running a coffee shop, spending my days refilling ice, milk and going to the bank for change. But, that experience, in nuanced ways, was actually what sent me into real estate. It brought to light what my passions really were, and weren’t. I had worked in real estate in the past in various ways, and really enjoyed it. I had considered getting my license a few times, but “never had the time” or “didn’t want to work on commission only”. When the coffee business started to turn on me, my heart took over and led me back to real estate. I’m realizing now that it didn’t take much time at all to get my license, and the work doesn’t feel like work because I love it…which makes commission based pay a little easier to manage.
The funniest thing is, every single job I’ve held before has some quality that I apply to real estate. It was all just meant to be I suppose. 😉
I also love bringing women together to collaborate and empower one another. There is something so magical about the energy that is created when women come together. There is so much strength within us, but when we work together – that strength multiplies. Sisterhood, support and loyalty is so important, and I try to nurture that culture in everything I do, including real estate. As women in business, I believe we can create much more profound and dignified progress by working together, rather than competing. In the past, years ago, I hosted several women’s circles, which I like to call ‘Goddess Gatherings’. The biggest events I’ve done were both 2 night retreats in nature, spending time connecting with each other, our ancestors, the earth, and the energy of sisterhood. I like to incorporate body-movement of some kind such as hiking or yoga, as well as a meditation practice, ceremonial cacao, and sacred ceremonial circles meant to crack open the soul and become more connected to ourselves and our sisters. It’s pretty cool. When I’m not out in the woods meditating with my girls, find me in the streets rooting for my friends and cheering on their successes.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would say…not one part of my journey has been smooth, lol. Some of the struggles were…all of them. Maybe I’m exaggerating. I’ve had a beautiful and meaningful life, but my road has definitely had some obstacles. I had a rough childhood, to start; I experienced a nasty divorce, foster care, physical abuse, and more, all before the age of 5. Traumas shifted to mental abuse and a narcissistic stepmother as I grew into adolescence, and then my bio mother took her own life when I was 11, with me in the back seat of the car. I fought thru depression and managed to have friends. I got involved in Girl Scouts, and I was doing great. Until high school. I witnessed a school shooting my senior year, (Santana High), and never went back. My stepmom kicked me out of my house for not going back to school, and I was mostly homeless, sleeping in the backseat of a friend’s car. After a few months working at Burger King, I could afford to get an apartment with roommates. And then it was dissociated rebellion throughout my 20’s. It wasn’t until my 30’s that I really came back into my body and started to heal my soul.
This all might sound kinda wild, or sad, but honestly I’m so incredibly grateful for every experience, in some way, because each one taught me strength, resilience, and gratitude. Every challenging or traumatic experience I’ve had has taught me something about myself; and that I CAN overcome challenges. I AM able to do it. Because I’ve done it before. My life has taught me that I can do hard things.
In my 30’s, I started reading books on healing my mind, body, soul. I started meditating, getting into nature, journaling, focusing on taking care of my body, and really working on my mindset. Working on my mind-body connection. Mindset is EVERYTHING. I’ve always known that in some way, deep down. I always knew I would be able to make life better for myself. It’s what kept me going in my early years. And I will die on that hill. You can rewire your brain and create a whole new life for yourself, and I think that’s one of the coolest things about being a human. Our minds are a total superpower. We can create anything from just our imagination alone. We can train our minds to be resilient and completely overcome previous thought-processes. It’s incredible. We can even heal our bodies with our minds, and heal our minds with our bodies. It’s truly magical.
So anyway, lol…
Now in my 40’s, the obstacles keep coming, but my life has taught me that tomorrow will be another day, and everything can change in a moment. That’s a great feeling. That’s hope. When there’s a will, there’s a way. I’ve come a long way to become who I am today, and I’m not ever giving up. I think that’s all we need to do to succeed in life, really. Never give up.
