Exploring Life & Business with Mary Gutierrez of Intrinsic Maven

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Gutierrez.

Hi Mary, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story has always had a deep undercurrent of purpose, even if I didn’t fully recognize it at the beginning. I was born and raised in Sydney, Australia, where I began my career working in the finance industry. A fast-paced, detail-oriented world that taught me how to think strategically and build strong systems. Those skills still show up in my work today.

In my 20s, I moved overseas to start a new chapter with my husband. We lived and worked in places like Italy and Japan, and those years deeply shaped how I see culture, identity, and the value of human connection. Eventually, we settled in San Diego, where I took on a federal job. It was stable, but something in me always knew I was meant to build something of my own, something more creative, more human, and more impactful.

That’s what led me to leave that security behind (a terrifying move at the time) and start my own business.

At first, the business was focused on graphic design. Then it became deeper with strategy. Then it became something even more meaningful: an approach I call self-development branding™. It’s not just for personal brands or solopreneurs, it’s for purpose-driven businesses ready to reconnect with their core identity, values, and vision. I began to realize I wasn’t just helping create logos, websites, or a surface-level strategy doc, I was guiding businesses through strategic and emotional transformation.

That realization sparked a recent rebrand from Intrinsic Maven Graphics to simply Intrinsic Maven, a strategic brand studio for visionaries who want to build something lasting. We focus on clarity, expression, and stewardship, not trend-chasing, but legacy-building. My role as a Brand Strategist isn’t just about telling clients what to do, it’s about listening, drawing out their essence, and translating it into a brand that feels like home.

The work I do is deeply tied to my own personal growth. I’ve walked through burnout, depression, and the quiet battles that come from trying to be everything for everyone. My resilience has been hard-earned and shaped by uprooting my life more than once, navigating motherhood, grief, reinvention, and finding strength in community. I’ve learned that healing and building often go hand in hand, and that insight and curiosity are things I bring into every strategy session and brand transformation.

Today, Intrinsic Maven is a small but mighty team. I lead all strategy, design, and creative direction, supported by two incredibly talented creatives; Duy and Jasmin. Together, we serve purpose-driven businesses who are ready to clarify their voice, deepen their brand, and step into the next chapter with intention.

This work isn’t just what I do. It’s who I am.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road. Starting a business is hard work, but starting one while navigating imposter syndrome and mental health challenges makes it even harder. In the early days, I was constantly questioning myself, second-guessing my decisions, and wondering if I was really cut out for this. I had to reevaluate my path more than once, but deep down, I knew this was where I was meant to be.

One of the biggest challenges was feeling like people only saw a fraction of what Intrinsic Maven could offer. We wanted to focus on strategy, transformation, and long-term growth, but many clients would come just for a quick logo or discounted design, not realizing the time, energy, and depth that goes into the work we do. Branding isn’t just surface-level. It’s not about trendy fonts or pretty color palettes. While some may offer only that, which is fine, we want to give our clients a deeper understanding of branding, It’s about alignment, identity, and building something meaningful from the inside out.

I’ve also had to resist the pressure to follow all the trends, posting daily, pumping out constant content, or trying to force visibility. At one point, I had to pause, reflect, and give myself permission to do things differently. I realized I didn’t want to follow someone else’s blueprint. I wanted to build a business that honors who I am, and use my gifts to help other business owners do the same.

Over time, those who chose to work closely with me began to see what I saw. I’ve had long-term clients tell me, “You helped me see my business in a whole new light. Not just visually, but mentally and emotionally, a complete transformation”. That kind of feedback reminds me I’m on the right path, even on the hard days.

Intrinsic Maven wasn’t built overnight and was never a get rich quick scheme, it was built in the quiet moments of doubt, in the honest conversations with clients, and in the decision to keep showing up as ourselves And that’s what we help others do now: gain the clarity, confidence, and strategy to build the brand, and business, they were truly meant for.

As you know, we’re big fans of Intrinsic Maven . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We’re a small but mighty brand studio based in San Diego, serving purpose-driven businesses who are ready to evolve with intention.

Our work centers on self-development branding™, a transformative approach that helps businesses reconnect with their purpose and build from the inside out using our signature Three Path Model™: Clarity, Expression, and Stewardship. We begin by uncovering the essence of the brand (your purpose, values, and voice), then bring that to life through compelling visuals and messaging, and finally support its long-term growth through intentional brand systems and ongoing guidance. We’re a small team with deep expertise, blending brand strategy, design, and illustration to create brands that are not only intentional but unforgettable.

We don’t believe in rushing into design or chasing trends. We meet our clients where they are, guiding them through a process that feels thoughtful, aligned, and grounded in who they are and who they’re becoming. Whether you’re rebranding after years in business or finally creating a brand that reflects your vision, we’re here to walk beside you, not just for the deliverables, but for the clarity and confidence that come with them.

We’re known for helping business owners finally see their brand clearly, not just visually, but in how it connects and communicates with their audience. Our clients often tell us, “This was more than branding. It changed how I see my business.”

One line from our manifesto says:
“Branding should feel like coming home to your business.”
And that’s exactly what we want our clients to experience, not just a visually beautiful brand, but a powerful return to purpose.

Because at the end of the day, we don’t just build brands,
we build brands with legacy.

What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is family. First and Always.

They’re the reason I do what I do. Every decision I make, every risk I take, every late night spent building this business, it’s all grounded in wanting to create something meaningful, not just for myself, but for the people I love most.

That sense of care naturally flows into my work. I want my clients to feel held, understood, and supported. Like they’re not just getting a brand, but someone in their corner who truly sees them. That kind of connection matters to me. Because it’s not just about strategy or visuals, it’s about helping people build something they’re proud of, something that reflects who they are, and something they can pass on.

Through seasons of change, moments of doubt, and quiet reinvention, I’ve come back to the same truth: the things that last are built with love, with intention, and with people in mind. Whether I’m raising my son, designing a brand, or showing up for a friend, I want it to come from that place.

Because at the end of the day, what matters most to me isn’t the output, it’s the impact, and the people I create it for.
