Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Morin
Hi Mary, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Jessica Terry and I (Mary Morin) just opened the Shrunk 3D San Diego Franchise location in July. Jess and I had met a year earlier when our sons both wanted to attend a trip through Europe that their school offered, and they needed us as chaperones. We became fast friends after rooming together for 12 days, traveling around Europe. After that trip, we started motivating each other by starting an early morning exercise routine. At the time, Jess was working at the local Montessori school, and I was finishing out my time on Active Duty. I knew I wanted to do something different that was mine, and Jess was ready for the same. With that in mind, we began our entrepreneurial journey to figure out what it was that we were going to do. It didn’t take long before we turned to franchises just to see what things were out there. That’s when we found Shrunk 3D. We instantly fell in love with the concept, and that hasn’t changed. In a time when people are increasingly disconnected due to technology, we wanted to be part of a technology that engaged people and gave them a unique experience that can’t be replicated. On top of that, we’re totally mobile so we get to go where the party is! We’ve gone to festivals, markets, personal celebrations, corporate events, weddings, and more. We love to get videos from our customers when they open the box with their miniature inside and know that we were part of that forever moment! It’s pure joy!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our biggest obstacle is the newness of it. Most, understandably have a lack of knowledge about the process and limitations. People love our product when they see it, however, it takes 3-5 weeks before they will receive it, and it cannot be created off of a single picture. We capture the customer in our custom trailer equipped with 95 cameras and 8 projectors that result in 190 images to form a complete 3d scan. Following that, an artist must smooth out and highlight the detail of the rough image to ensure the replica is print ready. Then quality assurance reviews it before our printer prints it in color. In short, there is a lot of technology, custom design work and high end printing capability that is involved in creating a bespoke replica.
As you know, we’re big fans of SHRUNK 3D San Diego. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Shrunk 3D is not your average photo booth. We’re the first fully mobile 3D imaging booth on wheels. Our 17ft trailer is equipped with 95 cameras and 8 projectors that captures 190 images in a couple of seconds. Using photogrammetry and the talent of our designers, we’re able to convert those photos into an awesome 3D memory. The resulting 3″-9″ miniature is color printed in 3D. Made of an ultra premium nylon, these miniatures are lightweight, durable, and fade resistant. You can also personalize them with names, dates, logos, QR codes, business card info, etc.
But the replicas are only part of it. Shrunk 3D is an experience! Since we operate out of a fully mobile, fun, retro-inspired trailer, we’re able to attend all your best events and capture that day like no other. When guests step into our “photo studio on steroids”, they are wide-eyed with excitement. And, honestly Jess and I are the icing on the cake. We love being part of peoples memories and bringing this experience to others. We will make sure you have a great experience and get a few laughs in along the way. (We like to keep it fun:)
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
We are able to capture people and pets. We can do up to two adults with a small child or pet in one scan. We also offer a profit share for fundraising (amazing custom trophy, anyone??)
