Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikayla Hayes.
Hi Mikayla, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My first year out of high school I hurt my low back and didn’t get results from western medical intervention and did not want to continue with pain medication. I was introduced to alternative healing modalities and highly benefited from acupuncture. At the time, I was also working for an organic family farm here in San Diego and was learning about food and herbs as medicine. As I began to figure out what my career goals were, I took a tour of an acupuncture college, viewed their herbology room, and found my interests colliding. The next 4 to 5 years I committed to learning this beautiful ancient medicine and got a Master of Science and Doctorate of Chinese Medicine. After graduating, I continued to train and work in Asia, Europe, and Mexico until settling in my native Southern California. Today I currently own a private practice called Lucky Acupuncture in the Point Loma area and work with Scripps and Sharp to provide acupuncture at the hospitals for a wide range of patients. I am very happy to serve my community and do work that I am passionate about.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Although I’ve loved the road to get where I am, there are always struggles, and my guess is there will continue to be. Especially with so many years of school, it wasn’t always easy to stay motivated or to have 12-hour days or sacrifice time with family and friends, or to live on such a tight budget. Since being licensed, going through the pandemic was a massive hurdle and learning curve for everyone in healthcare. Something that helped me get through this was finding mentors that inspired me professionally and emotionally. It was also important that I didn’t lose touch with my initial inspiration to help individuals and families with their health in a holistic sustainable way and ultimately to be of service.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about Lucky Acupuncture?
I am a licensed acupuncturist and herbalist and owner of Lucky Acupuncture. I also work as an acupuncturist within hospitals and continue to serve the communities of San Diego and Tijuana through my work with Acupuncturists Without Borders. I have experience practicing at Rady Children’s Hospital and working with women and children in integrative community settings in Europe, Asia, and Mexico.
I specialize in Pediatrics and have the unique opportunity of training in the ancient art of shonishin, a needless acupuncture technique for children. I also delightfully work with midwives to serve women in all stages of pregnancy and postpartum, those trying to conceive or regulate their menstrual cycles. I aim to integrate my training in Eastern and Western medicine to address each person’s unique concerns and help them reach their health goals.
Other clinical areas of focus include women’s health, holistic skin care (including microneedling), acute and chronic pain management, mental-emotional health, digestive issues, and more. In addition to acupuncture, I use modalities such as moxa, cupping, herbal medicine, and nutritional counseling to address individual needs.
