Today we’d like to introduce you to Neda Faraji.
Hi Neda, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
After identifying a huge gap in the market for fresh off the kettle, real, high quality bone broth, I was on a mission to change this.
When I was pregnant and recovering from surgery, my doctor recommended drinking 1-2 cups of bone broth a day. When I asked why, he informed me that bone broth provides immune support and helps with inflammation.
Researching more, I came across peer review articles that reported its benefits.
Bone broth is a natural, holistic remedy loaded with anti-inflammatory properties, amino acids, protein, collagen, glucosamine, gelatin, and minerals. However, every broth I’ve found was loaded with 250mg of salt per cup, which was counterproductive to reducing inflammation.
Majority of broths I found at the stores were so far from what authentic bone broth is supposed to be. They’re full of shelf stabilizers (real bone broth should never be on an unrefrigerated shelf) or powders (which are soaked in acid and boiled). I decided to take matters into my own hands and create a fresh off the kettle, real, high quality bone broth that our ancestors made and get it into the hands of everyone that needed it.
That’s when Ossum Bone Broth was created. The way bone broth was intended to be made. No additives, local, fresh, organic ingredients made for an Ossum Life. I never intended to sell bone broth. I was sharing different recipes on Instagram and Facebook, and it just kind of happened. I think my passion and love for quality food and ingredients attracted people.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It’s been a smooth road…Said no entrepreneur ever. Lol. I have a marketing background, which has been helpful, but no experience as an entrepreneur. I luckily brought in an investor that has a lot of experience in this area, which has helped a lot. The fresh food business is a highly regulated and brings its own set of challenges. The wonderful thing about challenges are that it gets your brain moving outside of the box. We’re currently navigating how to ship our bone broth in a time and temperature controlled way, which has brought its own unique set of hurdles to jump over.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Ossum Bone Broth?
Ossum Bone Broth promotes a healthy lifestyle by building a strong body with quality ingredients. Bone broth is found to be one of the most bio-available sources of protein and collagen the body can consume. It’s a natural, holistic remedy loaded with anti-inflammatory properties, amino acids, protein, collagen, and minerals. However, most broth is loaded with sodium, which is counterproductive to reducing inflammation.
We created this broth with the intention of easily incorporating a nutrient-rich, all-natural supplement into our every day life. Keeping our ingredients local and fresh ensure that the broth you consume not only tastes amazing, but will make you feel your best. Not all Bone Broth is the same. Not by a long shot. This is where ethics comes in. There are meticulous and thoughtful steps that go into the process of creating bone broth. If these steps are missed, it can compromise the entire product.
There’s no doubt in my mind that the bone broth you find in grocery stores on an unrefrigerated shelf and in the freezers take shortcuts for the sake of monetization. I mean, how would the consumer know the difference? Unless they investigate. Sourcing bones is everything when it comes to bone broth. Grass-fed, Free range and organic simply aren’t enough. Why? Because Bones are tissue that bioaccumulate. It means if the animal is exposed to pesticides, heavy metals, pollutants, distress, unnatural diet, you’ll find it in the bones. Make bone broth with them, it ends up in your body.
We investigate farming practices, diets, land, and quality of life of the animals when we source our bones. It’s only ethical. We don’t believe in compromising quality to save a buck or cheating the public to make a few more. We do believe in standards, best practices, quality, and freshness. We don’t believe in the $6 shelf broths or powders, and neither should the public. They deserve better. They deserve transparency and truth.
Challenge these companies and ask the bigger questions on where they’re sourcing their products from, the quality of life, and the process they take to create their bone broth. This is why we created Ossum Bone Broth, to be the difference maker in this industry.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love the gorgeous green ambiance of San Diego and being able to drive down to the ocean any time. I’m originally from Chicago, so. I wish we had more seasons! There’s nothing like fall and winter in the Midwest.
