Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Barvie.
Hi Nicole, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was born in Alaska to immigrant parents from Argentina and Mexico, and from an early age, life was anything but ordinary. Between the ages of 3 and 15, I lived everywhere from Sedona and Flagstaff to Mexico, Venezuela, and Peru. Those formative years shaped my worldview and gave me a deep appreciation for different cultures and perspectives.
We eventually settled in Tucson, Arizona, where I finished high school and later attended the University of Arizona, earning my degree in Political Science. After college, I moved to San Francisco, where I bartended, made lifelong friends, and enjoyed some of the most unforgettable years of my life.
Eventually, I found my way to San Diego for law school—and found my husband there, too. We built our lives here, and both chose to practice law in a city we love. I spent nearly a decade at a boutique insurance defense firm, gaining invaluable experience.
But after the birth of my second daughter and the shifts brought on by the pandemic, I decided to take a leap and build something of my own. That’s when I started my own law practice—driven by a desire for greater purpose, autonomy, and the chance to advocate more directly for people who need a voice.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Honestly—and I say this hoping not to jinx it—starting my own practice has been the best decision I’ve ever made. It’s felt surprisingly smooth in many ways. I think that’s because it aligned so deeply with where I was in life and what I truly wanted.
That said, it hasn’t been without its challenges. The biggest one by far has been financial. Because I run a contingency-based practice, I didn’t see income for the first two years. That required a lot of faith, strategic planning, and support from my family. But I believed in the cases I took on, and I believed in myself. Looking back, it was all worth it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Barvie Law, APC?
Barvie Law is a San Diego-based law firm that represents employees and injury victims. Specifically, people who have been wronged in the workplace or harmed due to someone else’s negligence. We focus on employment law and personal injury, and we work exclusively on a contingency basis, which means our clients don’t pay unless we win.
What sets us apart is our personal approach. Many of our clients are immigrants, first-generation Americans, or individuals who have never hired a lawyer before. We take the time to explain the process in plain language, stay in close communication, and make sure our clients feel heard and empowered every step of the way.
I’m proud that Barvie Law has built a reputation for being aggressive when it counts and compassionate when it matters most. We don’t just handle cases, but we build trust and deliver results.
Our brand is rooted in justice, integrity, and access. We believe that everyone, regardless of background, status, or language, deserves a fair shot in the legal system. That belief drives everything we do.
Whether someone has been wrongfully terminated, denied wages, harassed at work, or injured in an accident—we’re here to fight for them, and we don’t back down.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something people often find surprising is my background. I was born in Alaska to immigrant parents, and Spanish was my first language. I spent much of my childhood living in different parts of Latin America before eventually settling in the U.S. I bartended in San Francisco before becoming a lawyer and launching my own firm in San Diego.
It’s not the most traditional path and that’s something I’m really proud of. My journey has given me a unique blend of empathy, adaptability, and street smarts that I bring to every aspect of my life.
