Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick Kenger.
Hi Patrick, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was in college many years ago, I was writing and creating content around menswear as more of a hobby. Style was a skillset I was trying to acquire, and I went down the rabbit hole of books, courses, etc. and would then try to distill that down for others.
I found there was just a lot of bad advice out there, mostly from people who would follow style “rules” blindly without really understanding how it all works. I wanted to demystify things for guys, and that’s what I started to write about.
Around this time, some of my friends would start asking for help with their style. They’d ask me to take them shopping, what they should wear on a night out, etc. That’s when I started to think about what this would be like as a business, and that’s where it all started.
From there, I created the business and furthered my fashion education more formally. I gained certifications from top schools, studied with other stylists, and started putting things into action.
That was about ten years ago, and since then, we’ve grown into one of the top men’s styling services in the US and get to work with great guys nationwide, as well as regularly contribute style advice to news outlets like CNN, NBC, Wall Street Journal, etc. We’ve helped over a thousand men now 1-on-1 transform their wardrobes and improve the way they look, and it’s a pleasure to help guys gain that sort of confidence.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s never a smooth ride and it always takes longer than you think.
Even if you’re extremely talented with what you offer, you still need to run the business side of things – marketing, sales, finance, etc. and so you’re really tasked with developing another skillset when you start a business. I had the personal styling down, but just operating a business brings a lot of challenges you might not expect.
But along the way, you figure it all out. God, the universe, etc. has a way of moving you towards your goals if you’re willing to stick with something. The hardest part is starting. The second hardest part is sticking with something. It sounds simple but there will always be challenges so just expecting that and sticking with it are key.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Pivot Image Consulting is a men’s personal stylist service that works 1-on-1 with guys to improve their wardrobe and update their style. We work with men online and in-person around the country to help educate them on what looks best on them, clean up their existing wardrobe, and add stylish clothing that fits perfectly.
Pivot has been around for almost a decade, and in that time, we’ve only worked with men, which has allowed us to be top of the field and deliver incredible results for the clients we work with. Further, the service is holistic, meaning we don’t just get guys a couple of cool outfits. Instead, we redo their entire wardrobe so that their style is sustainable for the long haul.
What were you like growing up?
This is an interesting one.
Growing up I was probably a bit more introverted, which is what led me into menswear and style; you can make friends and signal a lot to people with the right clothing.
I would spend a lot of time tinkering with things and building things. I found it fun to figure out how stuff worked and would take a deep dive on anything I found interesting.
I was also extremely independent and adventurous. I just wanted to get out there and see how the world worked.
I think I’m still very much like this!
